Dhaka: Amid relentless attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, a Hindu man named Bajendra Biswas has been allegedly shot dead by a colleague in Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh.

According to reports in the local media, the accused, who has been identified as Noman Mia, has been arrested.

Both the accused and the 40-year-old victim were reportedly members of the political group Ansar.

The incident allegedly took place at Sultana Sweaters Limited factory on Monday evening.

What led to the murder?

An eyewitness claimed that there was no argument or dispute between them prior to the incident, adding that the accused fled the spot after shooting the victim.

The victim was reportedly a native of Kadirpur village in Sylhet Sadar upazila. The accused, Noman Mia, is the son of Lutfar Rahman of Baluturi Bazar area under Taherpur Police Station in Sunamganj district.

How have attacks on Hindus affected India, Bangladesh ties?

The incident is one among a spate of attacks on Hindus which has led to straining of ties between India and Bangladesh.

On Monda, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah reached Dhaka after an “urgent call” from the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry.

“In view of the recent situation in bilateral ties with India, Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi M. Riaz Hamidullah was called to Dhaka on an urgent basis,” an official statement said.

Several other countries, including Russia and Canada have also condemned the attacks on Hindus and other minorities and called upon the Bangladesh to put an end to the violence.

What is the current situation in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh has been riddled with widespread since sitting prime minister Shiekh Hasina was forced to flee to India following a popular uprising. 

The killing of popular youth Osman Hadi earlier this month led to a renewed wave of violence across the country with houses of minorities and offices of media houses being set on fire.
