Anti-Khamenei Protests: Iran To Hang 26-Year-Old Protestor In First Reported Execution (X: @RyanAlimo)
Iran: Iran is reportedly preparing to hang a 26-year-old man accused of taking part in protests against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
If carried out, it would be the first reported execution directly tied to the latest wave of anti-government demonstrations. The news has triggered sharp reactions from human rights groups and Iranian activists abroad.
Previously, Iran has used execution as a tool to quell dissent but those deaths have largely been carried out through shootings.
The condemned man, who is identified as 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, a resident of Fardis in Karaj suburb of Tehran. He was arrested on January 8 for participating in anti-Ayatollah Ali Khamenei protests that have spread across Iran.
According to a human rights group, Soltani's sentence is scheduled for Wednesday. Rights groups say he was accused of slogans and actions seen as "insulting" or "hostile" to the Supreme Leader, charges that often carry the harshest penalties in Iran.
According to reports, the man was convicted under broad national security laws. These laws are frequently used to silence dissent. Activists claim the trial was rushed and lacked basic safeguards, including proper legal representation and transparent evidence.
Hengaw Organisation for Human Rights, a Kurdish civil rights group registered in Norway, has raised concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the legal process.
Iranian officials, however, maintain that the sentence follows the country's laws.
This possible execution comes at a sensitive time, with Iran already under international scrutiny for its handling of protests and dissent.
Human rights organisations say the hanging would send a chilling message to protesters and critics of the regime. They warn it could mark a dangerous escalation in the state’s response to opposition voices.
Iranian activists, both inside and outside the country, have launched online campaigns calling for an immediate halt to the execution. Several international rights groups have urged Tehran to stop the hanging and review the case. Western governments are also being pressed to raise the issue through diplomatic channels.
