Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which won a landslide victory in the Bangladesh elections, has said that it will raise the issue of Sheikh Hasina's return with India. Senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Ahmed issued a statement on Sheikh Hasina's extradition on Friday. He said the BNP will officially appeal to the Indian government to extradite Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka so she can face her trial.
"We will pressure India to extradite Sheikh Hasina in accordance with the law. We will appeal to the Indian government to send her back to face trial. This is a matter between the foreign ministries of Bangladesh and India. Both ministries will work on it further," Salahuddin Ahmed said.
BNP leader Salahuddin's statement on sending Sheikh Hasina back to Dhaka is significant because his party is forming a government under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. Muhammad Yunus's interim government has taken a similar stance on the Sheikh Hasina case. Yunus's government has issued several statements on the issue in recent months.
Yunus's interim government has made Sheikh Hasina's extradition a source of tension with India. Consequently, the BNP's stubborn stance on this issue could become a source of tension with India. India has not given any indication of Hasina's extradition. Consequently, the BNP's firm stance could become a new source of tension in relations between the two countries.
Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 2024. Sheikh Hasina's government fell in Bangladesh following protests in July and August 2024. Following the violence, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee Dhaka in a hurry. Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 2024.
Sheikh Hasina has been tried in absentia in Dhaka and sentenced to death. The Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh and various political parties, including the BNP-Jamaat, have repeatedly called for the Indian government to deport Hasina.
