Bangladesh Envoy In India Flies Back to Dhaka On 'Urgent Call': Report (X)
New Delhi: Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Reaz Hamidullah returned to Dhaka late on Monday after being urgently called from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there, reports said.
The move comes amid growing diplomatic tensions between the two neighbours following recent unrest in Bangladesh and protests in India.
"In view of the recent situation in bilateral ties with India, Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi M Reaz Hamidullah was called to Dhaka on an urgent basis," mass-circulation daily Prothom Alo reported.
Quoting an unnamed "responsible source" in the foreign office there, the newspaper said Hamidullah reached Dhaka on Monday night from New Delhi in response to the urgent call.
According to reports, "Hamidullah has been summoned to Dhaka for discussions on the recent situation of bilateral relations."
Ties between the two countries have worsened amid unrest in Bangladesh and protests in India over violent incidents inside Bangladesh. Recent weeks saw angry demonstrations in several Indian cities condemning the killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. Hundreds gathered near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to voice their outrage.
In response to those protests, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry summoned India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka earlier this month, saying the demonstrations endangered the safety of its diplomatic missions. India, in turn, summoned Bangladesh’s envoy to convey its own concerns over security threats to Indian diplomatic facilities in Dhaka.
