Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made a big admission on Tuesday. He acknowledged his country's violation of the 1999 Lahore Agreement with India. This admission appeared to reference the Kargil conflict, initiated by General Pervez Musharraf's actions, despite the agreement signed by Sharif and former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He said, "Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests on May 28, 1998. Subsequently, Prime Minister Vajpayee visited our country and reached an agreement with us. However, we failed to uphold our end of the agreement, which was our responsibility."

The Lahore Declaration, signed on February 21, 1999, after a historic summit between Nawaz Sharif and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, aimed to promote peace and stability between India and Pakistan. However, just months later, Pakistani intrusion in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir escalated into the Kargil conflict.

Sharif's account of ouster and political maneuvering

Discussing his removal from office by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar in 2017, Nawaz Sharif criticized the judiciary's actions and denied the accusations against him. He accused General Zahirul Islam, the former head of the ISI, of orchestrating his ouster and installing Imran Khan as prime minister.

Sharif's defiant stand

Sharif also addressed allegations of collusion with the military establishment, denying them vehemently. He claimed that efforts were made to create divisions between him and his brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, but Shehbaz remained loyal.

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif commended his brother, Shehbaz Sharif, for his unwavering support, highlighting Shehbaz's refusal to abandon him for political gain. Despite offers to become prime minister himself, Shehbaz stood by Nawaz's side.

Promises for party fortification

Upon his election as president of the ruling party, Nawaz Sharif pledged to strengthen the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and enhance its organizational capabilities.
