Pakistan nominates Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize (Social media)
International News: The Pakistani government has formally put forward the name of U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with a critical diplomatic intervention that helped prevent a full-blown military confrontation between India and Pakistan in 2025. The crisis, which escalated dangerously after the Pagalgam terrorist attack, had raised fears of a potential nuclear conflict between the two long-standing rivals.
In its formal statement, Islamabad lauded Trump’s "strategic foresight and timely mediation," claiming that his efforts played a decisive role in facilitating a ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
According to Pakistani officials, the situation had reached a boiling point after India allegedly initiated “unprovoked military action,” violating Pakistan’s sovereignty. In response, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, which it described as a "calibrated and limited military operation" aimed at deterrence without harming civilians.
Pakistan asserts that it was Trump’s quiet back-channel diplomacy that played a crucial role in defusing the crisis. The government said he maintained communication with both New Delhi and Islamabad and persuaded both sides to stand down before the situation escalated further.
“This went beyond traditional diplomacy,” the statement emphasized. “It was a moment of statesmanship that averted a regional catastrophe and brought the focus back to peaceful dialogue.”
However, India has strongly denied any claim of foreign involvement in the ceasefire negotiations. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs clarified that all discussions between India and Pakistan were strictly bilateral, initiated at Pakistan’s request, and involved no third-party mediation.
In a recent phone call with Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India's consistent stance that no foreign nation has a role to play in its internal matters or its negotiations with Pakistan.
Pakistan also cited Trump’s repeated offers to mediate the Kashmir dispute during his presidency. Islamabad praised his “sincere commitment to lasting peace in South Asia,” stressing that a resolution of the Kashmir issue, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions, is vital for long-term regional stability.
The statement described Trump as “a genuine advocate for peace,” whose involvement, though controversial, was marked by intent to de-escalate and promote dialogue.
Pakistan’s nomination of Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize carries both symbolic and diplomatic weight. It underscores Islamabad’s narrative that Trump played a pivotal role in diffusing a regional crisis. However, with India firmly rejecting any suggestion of foreign mediation, the nomination could further complicate geopolitical narratives.
All eyes will now be on the Nobel Committee—will it acknowledge Trump’s role as a peacemaker or view the move as a politically motivated gesture in a deeply divided region?
