Iran Turns US Negotiations Into Narrative of Resistance and Strategic Success (Image Courtesy: Wikipedia)
Tehran: As the talks on the deal between America and Iran are progressing, Tehran is busy calling it a big victory. The Iranian government and the media there are loudly giving the message that Iran has not bowed down even after heavy military attacks and economic sanctions. On the contrary, America and Israel had to come to the negotiating table.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai posted on X. While sharing a picture of the old Persian Empire, he wrote that just as the illusion of the Roman Empire being invincible was broken, in the same way today Iran has not bowed down before the big powers of the world. It is clear that he is linking the current conversation with his history. They are telling the public that Iran did not kneel down.
Experts say that before the deal is finalized, it is difficult to say who will be the real beneficiary. But Iran has every chance to call this a victory domestically and throughout the Middle East. Eli Geranmayeh, analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, says that two months ago Trump was talking about “unconditional surrender”. Today the same America is finding a way out through negotiations. Iran proved that it can withstand the pressure of two nuclear powers, America and Israel.
According to the New York Times report, Iran has three big reasons. First, it showed its hold on the Strait of Hormuz. He has the power to shake the world's oil supply. Second, America and Israel could not fulfill many of their major objectives. Third, despite attempts to attack Iran's top military leaders and Supreme Leader, the government remained intact and did not fall from power. Most importantly, in the terms of the deal revealed so far, there is no major restriction on Iran's ballistic missile program or on its allied groups like Hezbollah and Houthi. Tehran is calling this also its victory.
There is another side to the picture. War and sanctions have broken Iran's economy. Steel, petrochemical and other big industries have been destroyed. Inflation is at its peak, people are worried.
If Iran gets permission to sell oil in the deal or its billions of dollars of money stuck abroad is released, then Tehran will call it a big success at home. The government will tell the people that look, we got the restrictions removed without bowing down. This means that whatever the paper of the deal may be, Iran is already busy winning the war of narrative.
