Tehran: Relations between Iran and the US have once again started to rise following the American military attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its president Nicolas Maduro.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council has stated that the US and Israel are pursuing a "deliberate strategy aimed at disintegrating Iran and undermining the country's foundations". Given the situation, Iran has now decided to abandon its policy of strategic patience.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council has issued a statement saying that if the US or Israel exploits the ongoing protests to threaten Iran's security, Iran will launch a preemptive strike. Most importantly, Iran has stated that it will not wait for an attack to occur but may act preemptively. Iran's military has been put on standby, and US bases have been warned of being targeted.
Iran and the US are bracing for a new confrontation. Referring to the ongoing protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump stated that the US would come to Tehran's aid if it did not stop killing peaceful protesters. Trump stated that the US was "locked and loaded" to respond to Iran.
A report by the Tehran Times dated January 6, 2026, stated that Iran is now moving away from a policy of "strategic patience." According to the report, If the US or Israel launches a new attack, Iran will use the most effective and decisive measures to make it their "last mistake".
The report states that Iran has decided that any new illegal attack must be final, and the strongest options are ready for this. This policy by Iran is considered a significant shift after last year's conflict against the US and Israel.
The Tehran Times wrote that Trump believes the protests are weakening Iran, but in reality, they are small and the government has controlled them. If the enemy makes a mistake, the "gates of hell" will open for them.
The Supreme National Security Council is Iran's key policy-making body that considers important decisions related to the country's security, defence, and foreign policy. This council is established in accordance with Iran's constitution and operates under the leadership of the president. It includes senior officials such as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, the president, the head of the armed forces, the foreign minister, and the intelligence chief.
In a statement, the council announced that it will no longer limit itself to retaliatory strikes; rather, it will strike first if it believes the enemy intends to harm Iran.
The council stated that, "By repeating and intensifying threatening rhetoric and intrusive remarks in clear violation of accepted principles of international law, the US and Israel are pursuing a deliberate strategy aimed at disintegrating Iran and undermining the country's foundations."
Iran possesses ballistic missiles and drones that can target US military bases in the Middle East. Iran used these missiles on a limited scale in response to US strikes in 2025. However, Iran was not moving towards a full-scale war at that time.
While Iran claims to possess hypersonic missiles, international experts and Western analysts are highly skeptical of this. Iran has developed supersonic (Mach 1 to Mach 5) cruise missile technology, and some models are in testing or development.
Iran claims that the Fatah-1 missile reaches speeds of up to Mach 13-15 and has a range of up to 1,400 km. These missiles can maneuver in and out of the atmosphere, allowing them to evade missile defence systems. There are claims that it will be used in attacks on Israel in 2024-2025, but this has not been confirmed. The Fatah-2 missile is more advanced and equipped with a glide vehicle, but it is not yet considered operational.
