Indus, Water
International News: After India's decision to stop the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan has now reached the forums of Muslim countries with its complaints. In the 25th session of the Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held in Jeddah, Pakistan accused India of snatching away "basic rights like water". According to media reports, Pakistan's permanent representative Syed Fawad Sher, while addressing a session titled 'Right to War', said that India's move is unilateral, arbitrary and a violation of the World Bank agreement.
He said that Pakistan is already facing water shortage and if the flow of rivers coming from India stops, then there can be a huge crisis in the country's climate crisis, agriculture and other important areas of life.
Pakistan said that India has not only violated international rules but has also tried to snatch away an important human right. Representative Fawad Sher said, "If India stops the water of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, then we will not have water left for agriculture. The country is facing water crisis and in such a situation India's move is a threat to our existence."
After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April, India had decided to stop the Indus Water Treaty. Along with this, work has also started on a strategy to speed up the completion of water projects under construction on other rivers including the Indus. India's stand has been that when Pakistan supports anti-India terrorism, then there is no justification left in maintaining such treaties.
However, even after Pakistan's complaint, no formal statement has been issued by the OIC. Nor has any member country spoken in favor of Pakistan publicly. At present, Pakistan has warned of continuously raising this issue on international forums, but India has taken a clear and firm stand regarding the use of water resources under its jurisdiction.
