New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. The discussion focused on the ongoing conflict, with Modi emphasizing the need for international unity against terrorism.

Commitment to peace and stability

Prime Minister Modi shared details of the call on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Spoke to Prime Minister @netanyahu about recent developments in West Asia. Terrorism has no place in our world. It is crucial to prevent regional escalation and ensure the safe release of all hostages. India is committed to supporting efforts for an early restoration of peace and stability.” This commitment reflects India's long-standing position on supporting peace initiatives in the volatile region.

Escalating tensions in region

The conversation comes in the wake of intensified military actions, particularly Israel's relentless airstrikes on Lebanon. Reports indicate that Israel has targeted high-ranking officials of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, with at least seven commanders reportedly eliminated in these strikes. The Washington Post has also reported that Israel is contemplating a limited ground operation in Lebanon, having kept the United States informed of its military strategy.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant addressed troops along the northern border, asserting that “the elimination of Nasrallah is a very important step, but it is not everything. We will use all the capabilities we have.” This statement underscores the Israeli military's preparedness to escalate its operations if necessary.

Netanyahu's stance on regional security

Earlier in the day, Netanyahu made pointed remarks regarding Iran, asserting, “There is nowhere in the Middle East beyond Israel's reach. We will not go to protect our people and protect our country.” His statements indicate a resolute approach to Israel's national security and highlight the ongoing tensions with Iran, which he claims will come to an end when Iran is “finally free.”

Hezbollah's response to potential invasion

Hezbollah's deputy leader, Naim Qassem, has warned of the group’s readiness for any ground invasion by Israel. “We will face any possibility and we are ready if the Israelis decide to enter by land, and the resistance forces are ready for a ground engagement,” he stated. This response signifies Hezbollah's commitment to counteracting Israeli military actions and maintaining its position within the conflict.
