Iran agent Israeli spy: In a stunning disclosure, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that a top officer in charge of countering Israeli espionage in Iran was, in fact, an Israeli spy. Ahmadinejad’s bombshell revelation has raised serious concerns about the depth of Mossad's infiltration within Iran's intelligence community.

Ahmadinejad, in a recent interview with CNN Turk, stated that by 2021, it had become apparent that the individual tasked with leading the country's efforts to counter Israel's Mossad operations was working as a double agent for Israel. "Israel organized complex operations inside Iran. They could easily obtain information. In Iran, they are still silent about this. The man who was in charge of the unit in Iran against Israel was an Israeli agent," Ahmadinejad revealed.

Extensive Mossad network within Iranian intelligence

This startling revelation is not limited to just one individual. Ahmadinejad further alleged that at least 20 other members of the Iranian intelligence unit responsible for monitoring Israeli espionage activities were also working for Mossad. These agents are suspected of providing Israel with critical information on Iran’s nuclear program, including involvement in the 2018 theft of sensitive Iranian nuclear documents.

Moreover, these double agents are believed to have played a role in the assassination of several Iranian nuclear scientists, weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities and exposing sensitive operations to Israeli intelligence.

What will be the broader regional implications?

The ex-president’s claims follow recent reports of an Iranian spy tipping off Israeli forces about the whereabouts of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, leading to his assassination in an airstrike on Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut. Ahmadinejad’s remarks echo earlier warnings by former Iranian intelligence minister Ali Younesi, who, in 2021, had stated that Mossad had successfully infiltrated the highest levels of Iran's government.

"The Mossad has infiltrated many government departments in the last 10 years, to such a degree that all the country's top officials should fear for their lives," Younesi said at the time. Ahmadinejad's recent allegations further validate these claims, suggesting that Israel’s espionage network within Iran may be more extensive than previously known.

Escalating tensions in the region

These revelations come at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. On Tuesday, Israel's military launched a "limited and targeted" ground operation against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, in southern Lebanon. This move follows weeks of heavy Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah targets, including key positions in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 960 deaths and more than 2,770 injuries since Israel began its airstrike campaign on September 23.

A growing crisis for Iran

Ahmadinejad’s shocking claims have created ripples not only within Iran but also across the broader Middle East. The infiltration of Mossad agents at the highest levels of Iran’s intelligence community is a major blow to the nation’s internal security, raising serious questions about the country’s vulnerability to foreign espionage.

As Iran continues to grapple with both internal and external threats, the former president’s allegations are likely to put further pressure on the Iranian regime, as it seeks to reassure its citizens and reassert its authority amidst growing regional instability.
