Washington: At least 40 people have been reported dead in the US military attack in Venezuela early Saturday. The dead are said to include civilians as well as military personnel. This information was given by a senior Venezuelan government official who has access to the initial damage assessment. The officer said this on the condition of not disclosing his identity.
The operation was part of a larger overnight military operation during which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was detained. It is being said that during the operation, there was darkness in many areas of the capital, Caracas. US President Donald Trump himself confirmed that Maduro has been taken out of the country.
After Maduro came into American custody, Trump said that America will take responsibility for Venezuela for the time being. Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, he said the US will not step back until there is a safe and balanced transfer of power. According to him, this step was taken so that the command of the country does not go into the hands of someone who ignores the interests of the Venezuelan people.
A few hours after the operation, a plane carrying Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived at Stuart Air National Guard Base in New York. According to the information, Maduro may appear in a federal court in Manhattan next week in cases related to narcotics and weapons.
Trump indicated that America would play the role of running Venezuela, even if for a short time. He also said that the country's huge oil reserves can be used to sell oil in the international market. It is clear from this that Washington wants to direct the future of Venezuela in its own way.
This action is considered to be the strictest American step taken for the purpose of regime change after the attack on Iraq in 2003. Critics are raising questions on the legal validity of this entire campaign and its far-reaching impact. At the same time, even after Maduro's removal, Venezuelan officials are openly talking about protesting.
