Beijing: Amidst ongoing disputes regarding trade, technology, and regional security between the United States and China, US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday. The meeting between the two leaders is considered highly significant, and the eyes of the entire world are fixed upon it. President Xi Jinping accorded a formal welcome to Trump at Beijing's 'Great Hall of the People.' The two leaders exchanged a warm handshake, following which Trump met with members of Xi Jinping's cabinet.

Was Donald Trump Accorded a Formal Guard of Honor?

Trump also introduced his delegation and cabinet members to the Chinese President. These included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Pete Hegseth. During this ceremony, the Honor Guard Battalion of China's People's Liberation Army also presented a formal Guard of Honor to President Trump. Following the formal welcoming ceremony, bilateral talks commenced between the leaders of the two nations. During the discussions, Trump heaped praise upon the Chinese President, describing him as a "great leader." For his part, Xi Jinping expressed his pleasure that Trump had visited China—the first such visit in nine years.

Why Did Donald Trump Heap Praise on Xi Jinping?

At the outset of the meeting, Trump openly praised Xi Jinping and expressed hope that relations between the two nations would grow even stronger in the future. He described Xi Jinping as a "great leader" and stated that relations between China and the United States would become better than ever before. Thanking Xi Jinping for the welcome he received, Trump said, "President Xi, I thank you very much. This is an honor the likes of which very few people have ever witnessed. I was deeply impressed by those children; they were happy—absolutely beautiful. The military arrangements were magnificent, of course, but those children were truly wonderful and represent so much."

What did Donald Trump tell Xi Jinping?

Trump remarked that he and Xi Jinping have shared a strong friendship for a long time, and that both leaders have consistently managed difficult situations through dialogue. He stated, "We have known each other for a long time." "Perhaps no two presidents of our respective countries have ever shared such a long-standing relationship. Our relationship has been magnificent. Whenever a difficulty arose, we resolved it together. I would call you, you would call me, and whenever a problem emerged, we resolved it very quickly. I hold you in high esteem for the work you have done for China. You are a great leader."

Trump also noted that he was accompanied to China by prominent American business leaders eager to expand trade and commercial ties with the country. He stated, "We have brought along some of the world's biggest and finest business figures. They are all enthusiastic about working with China." Describing the gathering as historic, Trump remarked that people across the United States were keeping a close watch on this summit. He added, "Some people are saying that this could perhaps be the greatest summit meeting of all time." Concluding his remarks, Trump said, "It is an honor for me to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the United States is poised to become better than ever before."

What did Xi Jinping say?

Meanwhile, during the bilateral meeting, Xi Jinping stated that the world's two largest economies—the United States and China—should act as "partners, not rivals." During this pivotal meeting held in Beijing, Xi Jinping observed that the world is currently undergoing a period of profound change, and at such a juncture, maintaining stability in China-US relations is absolutely essential. He remarked, "The entire world is watching this meeting of ours. We are currently witnessing changes in the global landscape on a scale not seen in the last century. International dynamics are shifting rapidly, and the world stands at a new crossroads."

Xi Jinping also raised several critical questions regarding the future trajectory of relations between the two nations. He asked whether China and the United States could forge a new type of relationship—one that avoids mutual confrontation—and work together to confront the global challenges facing the world today. He stated, "Can China and the United States escape the 'Thucydides Trap' and forge a new model for relations between major powers? Can we join forces to address global challenges and bring greater stability to the world? Can we work together for a better future for our people and for humanity?"

Xi remarked that these questions are significant not only for the two nations but also for the entire world and for history itself. He asserted that, as leaders of major powers, he and Trump must provide the answers to these questions jointly. According to experts, by invoking the "Thucydides Trap," Xi Jinping was drawing attention to the escalating tensions between an emerging power and the incumbent global superpower. This term was popularized by Harvard University Professor Graham Allison; it posits that when a rising power challenges an established global power, the risk of conflict increases.

The Chinese President emphasized that China and the United States share more common interests than differences. He stated, "The success of one nation can serve as an opportunity for the other. Stable China-U.S. relations are beneficial for the entire world. Cooperation will yield benefits for both nations, whereas confrontation will result in losses. We should be partners, not rivals. We ought to support one another's success and chart the correct path toward sound relations between major powers in this new era should be explored.'

Xi Jinping also welcomed Trump on his return to China after nine years. He congratulated the American people and Trump on the 250th anniversary of American independence. Xi Jinping stated, "I am extremely pleased to meet you here in Beijing. You are welcome back to China after nine years. This year marks the 250th anniversary of American independence. I congratulate you and the American people." At the conclusion of the meeting, Xi Jinping expressed hope that the two nations would work together to open a new chapter in their bilateral relations.

Was State Banquet Hosted in Donald Trump's Honour?

In the evening, a state banquet will also be hosted in honor of President Trump. President Trump arrived in China on Wednesday for a two-day visit. Upon his arrival in Beijing, he was welcomed by China's Vice President, Han Zheng. U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue, was also present during this occasion. This marks Trump's first visit to China since 2017. Prior to this, the two leaders had met face-to-face last October in Busan. Before Trump's arrival in China, the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. posted on the social media platform X, reiterating its stance on several sensitive issues pertaining to China-U.S. relations.

What Warning Had China Already Issued to the US?

It is worth noting that in a post on X, the Embassy stated that there are "four red lines" in the relationship between the two nations that must not be challenged. The four issues cited in the post include the question of Taiwan, democracy and human rights, political systems, and China's right to development. Experts believe that this meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping could play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of U.S.-China relations in the times to come.
