Nepal Protest Highlights: A major protest named 'Gen Z' erupted in Nepal's Kathmandu over social media ban including Facebook, X and YouTube, for not registering under state rules, erupted on Monday. The Gen Z protest continued on Tuesday as weel. The protest turned violent which forced the Nepalese army to intervene to control the situation. The authorities were forced to impose curfew.
Protesters stormed barricades in New Baneswar and surrounded Parliament. In order to control the situation, police responded with tear gas and water cannons. More than 100 people were injured including two journalists.

On the directive of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Police has been placed on high alert along the Indo-Nepal border in response to the escalating unrest in Nepal, ADG Amitabh Yash said on Tuesday.
Additional police forces have been deployed, and border surveillance has been intensified in districts adjoining Nepal to manage any potential spillover. “UP Police closely monitoring social media for Nepal-related sensitive content, immediate action to be taken if required,” the ADG stated.
Nepal is expected to announce a new government within the next few hours, according to Nepalese sources cited by Sputnik.
Several Telugu families staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kathmandu have been facing threats as agitators gathered outside, reportedly knocking on hotel doors and threatening arson. To ensure their safety, hotel management has moved the families to a nearby guest house. We are in constant touch with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu and coordinating through local representatives to safeguard the welfare of these families,” Andhra Pradesh’s Bhavan Team shared in a statement.
Over 570 inmates escaped from Jaleshwar prison in Mahottari when protesters and prisoners together broke through the prison wall on Tuesday. Deputy Superintendent of Police Heramba Sharma said that the incident occurred around 7 p.m. as more than 500 protesters armed with crowbars clashed with police, while prisoners used kitchen tools, Khabarhub reported.
Three people injured during Tuesday’s protests in Kathmandu have died while undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, according to a report by Setopati. All three victims were men. With these latest fatalities, the total death toll in the Gen-Z protests has risen to 24 — 22 of them in Kathmandu and two in Itahari.
Nepal’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson, Rabi Lamichhane, was freed from the jail by the Gen Z protestors, who took to the streets of the capital city of Kathmandu and other regions to protest against the government’s decision to ban social media platforms.
Air India has announced a one-time waiver on rescheduling charges for passengers with confirmed bookings to and from Kathmandu, as the airport remains closed due to ongoing protests across Nepal. The waiver applies to tickets issued up to 9 September for travel until 11 September.
The airline emphasised that “the safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority,” urging travellers to check for updates before planning their journey.

As unrest situation escalates in Kathmandu, reportedly two young protesters were killed in police firing in Kalimati. With this, the death toll in the ongoing Gen Z protest reached 22. Reportedly, the incident took place after protesters allegedly set fire to the local police circle, forcing security forces to open fire in response.
Due to the intensifying Nepal Gen Z protest, Air India on Tuesday cancelled several flights from Delhi to Kathmandu. The names of the cancelled flight includes AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218 and AI211/212.
According to the Air India official, ''We have cancelled these flights due to the bad situation in Kathmandu. We are monitoring the situation and will give new information soon. The safety of our passengers and staff is of utmost importance.''
As per the reports, Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel has accepted PM KP Sharma Oli's resignation as prime minister, a presidential aide says.
Kathmandu Mayor Balendu Shah said that this movement is entirely Gen-Z based. His statement, read, ''Gen-Z, your killer has resigned. Now the new generation will have to take over the leadership of the country.''
He appealed to the youth to be ready and also asked them to be ready for talks with the army chief. Along with this, he put a condition that it is necessary to dissolve the Parliament before the talks.

As per the sources, Nepal Prime Minister Oli had a discussion with Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, to provide military assistance in order to control the situation to ensure his safe exit from the Prime Minister's residence.

All the MPs of Rabi Lamichhane's Rashtriya Swatantra Party, Nepal's fourth largest party, have resigned. According to reports, Rabi Lamichhane has been arrested and sent to jail.

Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, and government spokesperson, stated that a late-night Cabinet meeting decided to lift the social media ban.
Amid the escalating unrest in Nepal due to the ongoing Gen Z protest, the Nepal government has postponed all the exam scheduled to be held on September 9, 10 and 11 across the country. Schools and colleges have been closed for the next two days in many cities.
Security has been increased around the offices of major political parties and senior leaders. Curfew was also imposed around the headquarters of the ruling UML and Nepali Congress. This step was taken to stop the growing unrest.
Following the Supreme Court's directive, the Nepal government had ordered all social media platforms to register within 7 days. The government stated that without registration, these platforms were being used to spread fake IDs, hate speech, cyber crime and misinformation in the country.
On September 4, the government banned 26 social media platforms for not registering within the stipulated time limit. These included big platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube. Platforms like TikTok, Viber were not banned because they had registered on time.
Amid the ongoing protest in Nepal, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has refused to lift ban on social media platforms, adding that the government’s decision stands and it should be supported publicly by all ministers.
Security has been beefed up in multiple districts of Uttar Pradesh that share their borders with Nepal following violent youth-led protests in the region over the ban on social media platforms, as per the officials' information on Monday.
Balrampur SP Vikas Kumar said security has been tightened along the border and intelligence agencies have been instructed to maintain strict surveillance. "Drone monitoring is being carried out and additional forces deployed at all police stations adjoining the border," he said.
In Bahraich, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has stepped up patrolling and increased checks along not just highways but also village tracks and forest routes connecting India and Nepal. "While only sporadic protests were reported near Nepalgunj, we have strengthened vigilance on our side. Patrolling has been intensified, and monitoring devices like face-recognition systems and automatic number plate readers are being closely used," said Ganga Singh Udawat, Commandant of SSB's 42nd battalion, as per the news agency PTI.
Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has tendered his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, citing moral grounds following the deaths of 19 people and over 400 injuries during violent “Gen Z” protests against the government’s social media ban and corruption, according to The Kathmandu Post. Lekhak submitted his resignation during a Cabinet meeting at Oli’s Baluwatar residence on Monday evening.
The protests, led by young Nepalis demanding accountability and governance reforms, saw police clashes with demonstrators in Kathmandu and other cities like Itahari, sparking political pressure and calls for Lekhak’s resignation from Congress leaders like Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is demanding Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s immediate resignation and calling for early elections, citing the government’s lost legitimacy following a brutal crackdown on “Gen Z” protests.
According to RSP General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti, as reported by The Kathmandu Post, “The relevance of the current government has completely ended. We demand the prime minister’s immediate resignation. A high-level judicial probe commission should be formed to investigate the incident and take stern action against the home minister and all others responsible”. Burlakoti condemned the government’s handling of the protests, which resulted in 19 deaths and hundreds injured in Kathmandu and Itahari, with protesters facing police fire.
Many people in Nepal think corruption is rampant, and the government of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has been criticised by opponents for failing to deliver on its promises to tackle graft or make progress in addressing longstanding economic issues. Nepal’s youngsters say the protest is an expression of their widespread frustration over the social media ban.
What happened on Monday?
At least 19 people died and dozens were injured as thousands of young people protested across major cities in Nepal. In the capital Kathmandu, protesters barged into the parliament complex by breaking through a barricade and setting fire to an ambulance. Police had been given orders to use water cannons, batons and rubber bullets to control the angry crowd. The army was deployed and a curfew was imposed in the city.

India’s border guarding force, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), has intensified vigilance and is closely monitoring the situation to prevent any spillover of unrest into Indian territory.
“An alert has been issued on the India-Nepal border, considering a protest in Nepal. Sashastra Seema Bal is keeping a close watch on the development,” officials told ANI.
The officials emphasised that the current alert is “preventive in nature”, and the situation remains under control.

As per the reports, a television journalist named Shyam Shrestha, was shot during the ongoing Nepal Gen Z protest in Kathmandu. Reportedly, the journalist is receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital.
As the protest escalated in Nepal over social media ban, protesters in Pokhara reportedly tried to breach the residence and office of the Chief Minister. The authorities have currently imposed curfew in several cities as a reponse.

As per the reports, the death toll from the ongoing Nepal protests has has risen to 16, over social media ban. The demonstration which started in Kathmandu, has now taken wider shape as it has now reached several other major cities, including Nepalgunj, Biratnagar, Chitwan, Pokhara and Butwal.
As per the Health Ministry, around 14 people have been reported dead and over 100 injured during Nepal's massive protest by Gen Z against malgovernance.
