India News: India today asks Russia to free all the Indian nationals working in the Russian military after a tragic death toll rose to 10 with the death of an Indian citizen. The Ministry of External Affairs said an Indian from Kerala died in Ukraine and another Kerala resident was injured in the ongoing hostilities. It called upon Russia to bring out clarity in circumstances of the death and immediate release of other Indian nationals still holding positions in the Russian military units.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts to Return Nationals to Homeland

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the issue had "been strongly taken up" with the authorities in Moscow as well as with the Russian embassy in New Delhi. India has again insisted strongly on the immediate release of the remaining Indians who are still with Russian forces. The government is making hectic efforts to make it possible to bring back the injured and repatriate the body of the deceased back to India.

Questionable Recruitment Practices

The case drew attention to a long-standing issue where Indian nationals have been inducted into the Russian army, allegedly on questionable terms. Last year, the Indian government said that 85 Indians had been released from the military and that 20 others were awaiting release. News reports claimed that some Indians were allegedly recruited into Russia's army by fraud recruitment agents and was being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

India tries to put an end to its citizens' participation with Russia and ensures the safe return of those remaining in service with diplomatic pressure over Russia.
