International News: Indian national Pema Wang Thongdok, originally from Arunachal Pradesh and currently living in the UK, was detained at Shanghai Pudong Airport on 21 November during a three-hour transit stop while travelling from London to Japan. Chinese immigration officials allegedly declared her Indian passport invalid, stating that her birthplace Arunachal Pradesh was part of China. She was reportedly held for over 18 hours without justification. The incident led India to lodge a strong objection with Chinese authorities in Beijing and New Delhi.
According to Pema’s social media post on X, Chinese officers repeatedly insisted she acknowledge Arunachal Pradesh as Chinese territory to proceed further. Her passport was seized despite holding a valid Japanese visa. Officials refused clearance and prevented her from boarding her connecting flight. The woman described the experience as deeply distressing and said she was pressured to accept territorial claims. She later sought assistance through a friend who helped contact the Indian Consulate in Shanghai.
Sources confirmed India conveyed its objection firmly, calling the detention “absurd and baseless.” Indian authorities reminded China of the Chicago and Montreal Conventions governing international aviation, highlighting that the woman held a valid Indian passport and had the right to travel globally. India clarified that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and indisputable part of the country, and residents are fully entitled to Indian citizenship and identity documentation. Officials demanded adherence to international travel norms.
The Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened at the local level after being informed of the situation. They reportedly issued strong protest and extended support to Pema. After diplomatic engagement, she was arranged to return safely via an alternate flight. Consular officers ensured immediate facilitation of her travel. The case was escalated to higher authorities in India. Pema has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the External Affairs Minister and senior officials, terming the incident an insult to national sovereignty.
Officials highlighted that China’s behaviour breached obligations under international agreements such as the Chicago Convention and Montreal Convention. These treaties uphold passengers’ rights and restrict arbitrary detention unrelated to security or documentation validity. Declaring a passport invalid due to political disputes over territory was considered unacceptable. Legal experts say immigration agencies are prohibited from challenging diplomatic status of passports. The incident raised concerns over possible misuse of transit regulations for geopolitical assertion.
The detention reflects ongoing tensions over China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh. India maintains the region as an indisputable and integral part of the nation. Authorities stated that such incidents do not alter the territorial reality. Analysts believe the move was an attempt to reinforce China’s stance informally. However, India’s strong protest signals zero tolerance for such provocations. Officials stated clearly that citizens from Arunachal Pradesh travel globally on fully valid Indian passports without restriction.
Although her transit was scheduled for only three hours, Pema was detained at the airport for more than 18 hours before being allowed to travel back. She described the ordeal as humiliating and unsafe. Chinese Eastern Airlines reportedly cooperated with immigration officials during detention. Following intervention, she was safely returned to her departure region. The incident has sparked intense debate on social media. Public sentiment strongly supports India’s firm stand and demands accountability from Chinese authorities.
