Bhopal: A horrific accident that happened in the early hours of Sunday in Bhopal became a deep blow to both the sports world and the Indian Navy. In the Parvaliya area, a speeding truck hit the motorcycle so hard that the bike was dragged for about 20 meters. In this accident, two promising kayakers of the Indian Navy died on the spot. Both were residents of Kerala and had won medals for the country.
The deceased have been identified as Vishnu Arya Raghunath (27) and Anand Krishnan (18). Both were posted at the Naval Base in Kochi and represented the country in kayaking competitions at the national level. Vishnu had won the gold medal in the Asia Cup, and Anand was preparing for the future with him. Both were living in Bhopal for some time for training.
According to the police, on Saturday night both the friends had gone to eat food at a dhaba on the Bhopal-Indore highway with their friends. He was returning by bike at around 3 o'clock in the night. Meanwhile, his bike was hit by a speeding truck in the Parvaliya area. The collision was so severe that the bike and the riders were dragged for about 20 meters. Initially it was believed that the bike had hit an electric pole, but investigation revealed that it was a case of collision with a truck.
After the accident the truck driver fled from the spot. Police have registered a case against the unknown driver, and the vehicle is being identified with the help of nearby CCTV footage. Parwaliya police station in-charge Rohit Nagar said that both were posted in Bhopal on naval training, and their bodies will be sent to Delhi on Monday, after which they will be taken to their native place, Alappuzha, in Kerala.
The Indian Navy and Sports Ministry have expressed deep condolences on the death of both the players. Both Vishnu and Anand were young and talented players from whom the country had great expectations. This accident is an irreparable loss not only for their families but also for the entire sports community. This incident has once again raised the question of how long speeding and carelessness will continue to take lives on the country's roads.
