BJP Govt a Calamity for Delhiites, Cannot Hide Waterlogging Failure: Saurabh Bharadwaj

AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj and Jarnail Singh accused Delhi’s BJP government of failing to address severe waterlogging that has caused over two dozen deaths this monsoon. Bharadwaj said the government cannot hide its shortcomings by blaming others, while Singh mocked the situation by suggesting boating as the city’s new mode of transport. The remarks follow multiple tragedies, including roof and wall collapses, during heavy rains in the capital.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has hit back at the BJP over recurring waterlogging in Delhi and the loss of lives caused by rain. Delhi State Convenor of AAP, Saurabh Bharadwaj, said the BJP government has become a disaster for Delhiites. He said it cannot hide its failure to prevent waterlogging by blaming others. On Friday, six people died after the roof of the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah complex collapsed due to water accumulation from rain. On Thursday as well, a biker died after a tree fell due to rain, and two children died tragically when a DDA wall collapsed. Despite repeated claims of desilting, Delhi continues to sink, and around two dozen lives have been lost so far. Trees and poles are falling in various places due to rain. Instead of making tall claims, the government needs to act on the ground. Delhi’s people have chosen the BJP to work, and it cannot shirk its responsibility by blaming others.

Nizamuddin Roof Collapse Claims 6 Lives

After reaching the spot where the roof collapsed in the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah complex in Nizamuddin, Bharadwaj said, “This is the entire Nizamuddin Dargah complex. There was an old structure here called Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, which was a very beautiful dargah. People just told me that around 4:00 p.m., it rained, and due to water collecting on or near the roof, the building collapsed. Six people died inside, and several were injured. The injured were taken to hospital by the administration. Some are in AIIMS, and perhaps one person is in RML Hospital.”

Bharadwaj said that AAP councillor Sarika Chaudhary from the area came and informed him about the incident. “It is very sad that for the past three months of this monsoon season in Delhi, trees, walls, roofs, and even electricity poles have been falling. So far, about 30 people have died in Delhi. Our request to the administration is to improve their work.”

Speaking on the DM’s statement about encroachments, Bharadwaj said, “The DM will only file cases against others to avoid responsibility. If you ask the DM, he will say, ‘Why are you asking me? I’ll file a case against you first,’ so that people get scared. These scare tactics are outdated.”

ASI Rules Add to Repair Woes

He further said the issue exists everywhere there is an ASI monument. “There is a parliamentary law due to which, if people try to repair structures around these monuments, the ASI officials come demanding money. So people cannot carry out repairs. This is not only here. Around all old ASI monuments, whether in Panchsheel or elsewhere, people cannot build their homes. In Chirag Delhi, if someone lays a brick, ASI comes. In Shahpur Jat, if someone does anything, ASI comes. This system also needs improvement.”

Bharadwaj said that AAP can only request the government. “We have been saying constantly that things will not change with just talk. Ministers and the Chief Minister need to come to the ground. Nizamuddin Dargah is a globally famous place. Humayun’s Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this is the Sundar Nursery route. The entire route is flooded with sewage water. Not just a small amount, but water up to the knees has been there for 15 days. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Humayun’s Tomb is known worldwide. What must visitors be thinking about Delhi?”

Earlier, Bharadwaj questioned Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, “On Thursday, in the Kalkaji area, a man died after a tree fell on him – did Arvind Kejriwal make that tree fall? When BJP came, school fees increased by 50–80% – did Kejriwal increase them? Since BJP came, there have been frequent power cuts – is Kejriwal cutting the power?”

He added, “Despite all BJP’s claims of desilting, Delhi is submerged. Two dozen people have died this year due to rain-related disasters. Seven people died from a wall collapse alone. Are these incidents Kejriwal’s doing? Rekha Gupta’s government will have to work. Without work, only big talk will help neither her nor the people of Delhi.”

Bharadwaj said, “The BJP’s four-engine government has no interest in working. For every failure, they use the same old excuse – blaming Arvind Kejriwal – just like the BJP central government blames Nehru for everything. BJP must stop running away from accountability because Delhi’s people elected them to work, not to point fingers at AAP’s former government or Kejriwal to avoid responsibility.”

‘No Cars, Only Boats Will Run in Delhi’: Jarnail Singh

Meanwhile, Tilak Nagar AAP MLA Jarnail Singh posted a video on X on Friday showing himself boating in waterlogged areas. He said, “Those planning to go to Rishikesh for rafting can cancel their trip. Delhi’s Rekha Gupta government has arranged first-class rafting in every street, lane, and colony. Delhiites just need to buy a small boat for a few thousand rupees. Going to Rishikesh costs money; instead, buy a permanent boat because Rekha Gupta’s government cannot stop waterlogging. Every rain will bring waterlogging to Delhi, so people can enjoy rafting in their own neighborhoods. Delhiites will have to endure this rusted four-engine government for the next four and a half years, so bear with them and enjoy rafting. This facility has been provided in every street. You can enjoy it near your home as well. There is no tax; rafting is completely tax-free. On X, Singh wrote, “No cars, only boats will run now! Enjoy free river rafting in Delhi. The four-engine government has completely failed to stop waterlogging in the city.”
