New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events during a wedding in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, police intervened to stop the marriage of a 15-year-old girl after she herself called the authorities. The groom and his wedding procession had arrived at the bride's home, and just as the couple was about to take their vows, the bride retreated to her room and contacted the police via a helpline. The officers swiftly arrived, shocking both families and the wedding guests. They confronted the bride's parents, who confirmed the wedding was indeed for their underage daughter.

Bride's courage stops marriage

The bride took a bold step by calling 100, the emergency police number, explaining that she was still a minor and not ready for marriage. “Sir, I am a minor. I want to study now. But my family is getting me married and my baraat has also arrived," she told the officers. Upon reviewing the girl's documents, police confirmed she was only 15 years old and immediately halted the ceremony.

Financial struggles and legal consequences

When questioned, the bride's family explained their difficult financial situation as the reason for the early marriage. “We cannot afford our daughter's education, which is why we arranged the marriage,” they told the police. The officers, however, reprimanded both families, stating, "The girl is a minor, yet you agreed to this marriage."

The groom's family claimed ignorance of the girl's age, but the procession was sent back without the bride. In a positive turn of events, the authorities ensured that the girl would be enrolled in school and receive government support for her education. Under a government scheme, she will be provided with 4,000 rupees a month to cover her educational expenses.
