Dust storm in Delhi-NCR (X)
On Saturday evening, Delhi-NCR witnessed a dramatic shift in weather as strong gusty winds and dust storms swept through the region, bringing an abrupt end to the day's oppressive heat. The sudden weather phenomenon offered a welcome breather to residents who had been enduring relentless summer temperatures over the past several days.
As the evening progressed, towering clouds gathered over the capital, and intense winds began to blow, stirring up thick dust and debris. This sudden drop in visibility caused widespread concern, with commuters scrambling for cover and traffic slowing down across major roads in the city. Visuals shared from areas like South Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram captured the intensity of the storm, as dark skies and swirling dust turned day into near-night.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), wind speeds surged across several parts of the city. At the Safdarjung observatory, wind speeds peaked at 67 kmph, while Palam near the Indira Gandhi International Airport recorded gusts of up to 65 kmph. The most severe gusts were reported from the Pragati Maidan area, where winds clocked an astonishing 76 kmph.
The IMD also issued a short-term forecast warning of continued adverse weather. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 60 to 70 kmph, with isolated gusts touching 80 kmph, were expected to persist in many parts of the city for the following hour. The agency classified the rainfall during this event in the "moderate" category, which means precipitation levels surpassed 15.4 mm.
Due to the intensity of the dust storm and accompanying winds, operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport were briefly affected. Several incoming and outgoing flights experienced delays as visibility dropped and ground staff operations were temporarily paused for safety.
This sudden turn in weather, although disruptive, came as a relief to Delhiites battling the sweltering heat, where temperatures had hovered above 45°C in recent days. Meteorologists suggest such dust storms and brief showers could continue as monsoon patterns begin to influence the northern plains.
