Delhi MCD bypoll: 14% turnout by 10 am, voting underway across 12 high-security wards

New Delhi: By-elections are being held for 12 seats of Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) on Sunday. Voting, which started at 7.30 in the morning, was slow in the first few hours, but as time progressed, crowds started appearing at the polling booths. According to preliminary data of the Election Commission, about 14 percent voting was recorded till 10 am.

Nearly seven lakh voters will decide the fate of 53 candidates in these by-elections. This election is important for all three parties – BJP, AAP and Congress, because the political wind in the capital can be indicated from this result.

Tight security in many wards, ban on mobile phones

Strict security arrangements have been made at many centers including Ashok Vihar. Carrying mobile phones inside the polling booth is completely prohibited in Ashok Vihar ward. Arrangements have been made to collect phones at the gate itself.

Volunteers deployed for the convenience of voters

Women volunteers are deployed in Ashok Vihar and other wards to help the voters. In case of increase in crowd at the booths, additional staff has been deployed to handle security and order.

Voting increased in Sangam Vihar and Mundka

Voters have been standing in line since morning to cast their votes at Sangam Vihar booth 163A. At the same time, there was a lot of enthusiasm among the voters in Mundka ward. Policemen are transporting elderly people on wheelchairs to the polling booth, due to which voting remained smooth.

AAP candidate Geeta Rawat casts her vote

Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Vinod Nagar, Geeta Rawat came to vote with her husband. Many other candidates also completed their voting formalities early in the morning.

Monitoring from headquarters, strict security at all booths

State Election Commissioner Dr. Vijay Dev is monitoring the voting situation through live webcasting of all 12 wards from the headquarters. Police teams are deployed at all polling booths and instructions have been given to take immediate action on any complaint.

Voting on which issues?

In Vinod Nagar ward, voters considered issues like cleanliness, condition of parks and interference of officials in illegal construction as important. Many voters said that they had come to vote only to solve local problems.

What is the special strategy of Congress and BJP?

Congress's maximum focus is on Sangam Vihar and Chandni Mahal wards. Due to AAP's internal tussle in Chandni Mahal, Congress is seeing a chance for an edge. BJP completed door-to-door campaign several times by giving responsibility to its senior leaders on every seat.

By-elections are being held on which seats?

Voting is going on in Chandni Mahal, Dwarka-B, Dhichaun Kalan, Narayana, Mundka, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Greater Kailash and Vinod Nagar wards. The results will come on December 3.
