New Delhi: As soon as new restrictions on vehicles came into effect in Delhi and surrounding areas on Thursday, there was an atmosphere of chaos on the roads. On one hand, the administration increased strictness to control pollution, while on the other hand, common people had to face huge problems. The situation was such that despite the implementation of the rules, there was no significant improvement in the health of the air.

Which vehicles took the most action?

Long queues formed at many border points entering Delhi as soon as the checking of vehicles started. Trains that did not have valid pollution certificates were stopped or turned back. Thousands of challans were issued within just 24 hours. Many petrol pumps also refused to provide fuel to vehicles without necessary documents, which further increased the anger of the people.

Amidst this strictness, the air quality index continued to remain at a dangerous level. On Thursday, the AQI reached the very poor category, and no significant improvement was seen in the situation. This raises the question of whether vehicle restrictions alone can solve the serious problem of pollution.

Why did people have to return to petrol pumps?

People going on daily journeys said that they were not fully aware of the new rules. Many drivers said that due to the sudden investigation and non-availability of petrol, they had to wander for hours. A huge crowd was also seen at the pollution checking centers, where people rushed to get their documents updated.

How was the air conditioning despite the strictness?

Delhi Traffic Police and administration teams continued to investigate in different areas, but confusion remained regarding the rules at many places. At some places the strictness was seen to be excessive, and at other places the investigation was minimal, which created dissatisfaction among the people.

What appeal did the government make to the people?

Government officials say that these steps have been taken keeping in mind the health of the people, and cooperation has been appealed to everyone. Also, due to bad air, people have been advised to work from home and avoid non-essential travel.

However, environmental experts believe that unless all sources of pollution are addressed simultaneously and over a long period of time, it is difficult to clean the air just by banning vehicles. At present, both the air of Delhi and the problems of the people are under question.
