The Election Commission has officially announced the schedule for the election of India’s next Vice President. Voting will take place on 9th September 2025, and the results will be declared the very same day after counting. This election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from the Vice President’s post recently, leaving the position vacant and triggering the election process.
As per Article 66(1) of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an Electoral College, which consists of:
This means only Members of Parliament (MPs) vote for the Vice President – the general public does not directly participate in this election.
The Election Commission had already compiled the list of Electoral College members and shared details via social media platform X on Thursday. Following this, it was widely expected that the official election schedule would be announced soon—which has now been confirmed.
To oversee the election, the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha has been appointed as the Returning Officer. Additionally:
have been designated as Assistant Returning Officers.
Notably, in the previous Vice Presidential election, the Lok Sabha Secretary-General was the Returning Officer – but this time, the responsibility has been assigned to the Rajya Sabha Secretary-General.
The votes will be counted immediately, and the results will be declared the same day.
With the election date locked in, political activity in Delhi has gained momentum. All eyes are now on which party nominates whom—and ultimately, who will become India’s next Vice President.
