New Delhi: Rajan Singh, a transgender candidate from the Aam Janata Party (AJP), has officially filed their nomination for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. Singh is contesting from the Kalkaji seat, a high-profile constituency currently held by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Kalkaji seat sees stiff competition, with Atishi of AAP defending her position, former Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri contesting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Alka Lamba, a former AAP member, now representing Congress. The seat holds significance due to its high-profile nature in Delhi’s political landscape.

A 27-year-old transgender rights activist, Rajan Singh heads the National Transgender Welfare Council. Originally from Bihar, Singh moved to Delhi where they live in Sangam Vihar. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Singh contested independently from South Delhi, though they secured just over 300 votes.
According to their affidavit to the Election Commission, Singh’s assets are valued at Rs 92.35 lakh, including Rs 1,300 grams of gold worth Rs 92 lakh, Rs 25,000 in bank deposits, and Rs10,000 in cash. This is a significant increase from the Rs 15.1 lakh assets reported during the last year’s Lok Sabha elections.
The Kalkaji constituency has a total of 1,94,515 voters, including 1,06,893 males, 87,617 females, and five transgender voters. Rajan Singh’s candidacy marks a significant moment for transgender representation in Delhi’s political sphere.
