As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day this week on August 15, 2025, a special campaign called Har Ghar Tiranga is once again inviting every family to proudly hoist the national flag at home. This small act carries a deep meaning, connecting citizens with the feeling of freedom and unity. It’s a way for people to show their love for the country through a simple, yet powerful, gesture.

How to Participate in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' Campaign

This year, India is going to celebrate 78 years of independence since 1947. The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, now in its 4th year, encourages everyone to display the Tiranga at their homes as a sign of patriotism. People can share their photos with the flag and become Har Ghar Tiranga Ambassadors. Those who join the campaign receive official digital badges and certificates from the Ministry of Culture as a thank you for their participation. The campaign started in 2022 as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and has grown into a large movement, turning the flag into a symbol of personal pride and unity for all Indians.

Volunteer Programme to Spread the Message

This year, the Ministry of Culture is making the campaign bigger with the Har Ghar Tiranga Volunteer Programme. Volunteers all over India will help by visiting homes, guiding people on how to hoist the flag properly, handing out flags, and encouraging everyone to upload their Tiranga selfies on the official campaign website starting from August 2. Volunteers who do a good job will get certificates, and the most active ones will be recognised at important state and national events.

The Campaign’s Wider Impact on Communities

The campaign is doing more than just bringing out patriotism. In Uttar Pradesh, the government is giving away 60 lakh (6 million) free flags to people in poor urban areas. These flags are made by local women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups have become a strong force in flag making across the country. According to reports, while the government supplied over 7.5 crore flags in 2022, by 2024, most flags were produced by SHGs, cutting down the government’s supply to just 20 lakh.

In Uttar Pradesh, more than 46 million flags will be hoisted this year, supported by rallies and cultural programmes. Women’s self-help groups in Varanasi have already made 2.5 lakh (250,000) flags to be distributed throughout the city. In other states like Madhya Pradesh, the campaign is also joining hands with cleanliness drives and promoting local pride, encouraging citizens to take part in events that celebrate the Tiranga and strengthen national identity.
