India Energy Security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high level meeting to review India’s energy situation. The meeting took place as tensions in the Middle East raised fears about fuel supply disruptions. Reports of LPG hoarding and rising prices had also created panic in some markets. During the meeting the Prime Minister asked ministries to closely monitor the situation. He emphasized that energy supply to Indian citizens must not be affected. Officials were instructed to stay fully prepared for any global disruption.

What PM Modi Told Citizens

The Prime Minister assured the country that there is no shortage of LPG or gas. According to him India currently has adequate reserves of cooking gas and fuel. He urged people not to panic about possible shortages. Government officials confirmed that supply chains remain stable. India continues to receive shipments of LNG and crude oil from several international partners. Authorities said the government is taking precautionary steps to prevent any future disruption.

What Ministers Said About Supply

Earlier Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also addressed concerns about fuel supply. He said India’s LNG reserves and energy infrastructure remain secure. According to him the country has sufficient stock to manage the situation. LNG imports from Qatar and other suppliers are continuing without interruption. The government is also exploring alternative shipping routes if the Strait of Hormuz becomes unsafe.

Why Hormuz Strait Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil routes. A large portion of India’s energy imports passes through this narrow sea corridor. Because of the conflict in the Middle East the route has become strategically sensitive. Any disruption there could affect global energy markets. India therefore is reviewing alternative routes and supply partners. These steps are meant to reduce dependence on any single region.

What Emergency Measures Taken

The government has invoked provisions under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955. A new Natural Gas Supply Regulation Order 2026 has been issued. This order allows authorities to control gas distribution during emergencies. Domestic LPG supply will receive priority over commercial consumption. The move is aimed at ensuring households do not face shortages. Authorities are also closely monitoring hoarding and black marketing of cylinders.

Why LPG Production Increased

Because of possible disruptions in LNG shipments the government asked oil companies to increase LPG production. Several energy suppliers had already invoked force majeure clauses due to regional instability. To reduce risk India boosted domestic LPG output. According to reports production has already increased by around ten percent. These steps are meant to maintain uninterrupted supply even if global shipments slow down.

What Long Term Strategy India Using

India is also diversifying its energy imports to reduce geopolitical risks. The country now buys crude oil and gas from more than forty nations. Besides Middle Eastern suppliers India has increased purchases from Russia the United States and African countries. India currently holds oil reserves sufficient for about eight weeks of consumption. However officials say prolonged global disruptions could still affect fuel prices and inflation. For now falling crude oil prices have provided some relief to the market.
