National News: India has taken a huge step towards becoming self-reliant in critical minerals. In Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, the Geological Survey of India has confirmed a massive reserve of lithium. Known as “white gold,” this mineral is vital for electric vehicles, batteries, and nuclear plants. Until now, India was importing 70 to 80 percent of its lithium from China. The discovery is being called India’s biggest lithium find so far and has already created a buzz in the global market.

China’s monopoly faces challenge

For years, China has dominated the global rare earth and lithium trade. But with this discovery, India is now preparing to reduce dependence on its neighbor. Experts believe this find could break China’s monopoly in the sector. At present, China controls most of the lithium supply chain worldwide. Once mining begins in Nagaur, India will emerge as a strong competitor in this critical market. The timing is crucial, as demand for lithium continues to grow rapidly.

Government starts auction process

The central government has wasted no time in moving forward. The Ministry of Mines has announced that the lithium block in Nagaur will soon be auctioned. Tender documents will be available from September 23, with the last submission date set for December 1, 2025. This step shows the government’s urgency to begin production and attract investors. Officials say the reserve could meet 80 percent of India’s total demand for lithium once operations begin.

History of Degana hills resurfaces

The Degana region of Rajasthan is no stranger to mineral wealth. In 1914, the British discovered tungsten in the Revant hills of the area. That mineral was used during World War I for military purposes. Mining continued for decades but eventually stopped after Independence. Now, the discovery of lithium in the same hills has revived the region’s importance. Locals believe Degana is once again set to play a key role in India’s industrial growth.

Other lithium reserves in India

Apart from Rajasthan, lithium reserves have been found in several other states. In Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, 5.9 million tonnes of reserves were identified earlier. Chhattisgarh’s Korba district already has India’s first lithium mine ready for auction. Karnataka’s Mandya district holds around 14,100 tonnes, while Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat also show potential. However, mining has not yet started in most of these states. Rajasthan’s discovery stands out as the largest so far.

White gold for a green future

Lithium is often called “white gold” because of its importance in modern technology. It is a key element in mobile phones, laptops, rechargeable batteries, and electric vehicles. With India pushing for faster adoption of EVs, the demand for lithium is set to soar. Experts say the Nagaur discovery could also create thousands of jobs in Rajasthan. The local economy will benefit from increased revenue, infrastructure development, and new employment opportunities.

A game changer for India

The discovery of such a massive lithium reserve is being hailed as a game changer. Once mining begins, India will not only reduce its import dependence but also establish itself as a global player in the lithium market. This will strengthen India’s strategic position and give it more bargaining power internationally. For Rajasthan, it means new opportunities, while for India, it signals a stronger, cleaner, and more secure energy future. The white gold from Rajasthan may well shape the next chapter of India’s growth.
