New Delhi: Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi has made a significant revelation regarding 'Operation Sindoor,' which was conducted against Pakistan approximately a year ago. He stated that the Indian Navy was merely minutes away from launching a maritime strike against Pakistan when the latter requested a halt to the attacks. He was speaking at the Navy's Investiture Ceremony, where he honored two senior naval officers with the 'Yudh Seva Medal' for their distinguished service during Operation Sindoor, which was launched in the wake of last year's terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
Speaking about the Navy's role, he remarked, "It is no longer a secret that we were just minutes away from launching a maritime strike against Pakistan when they requested a cessation of hostilities." It is worth noting that on April 22 of last year, Pakistan carried out a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claiming the lives of several Indian tourists. The victims were shot after being asked to identify themselves by their religion. This incident triggered a nationwide outburst of anger against Pakistan.
On the midnight of May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, conducting airstrikes across various regions of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) that resulted in the elimination of over 100 terrorists belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed outfits. This escalated tensions between the two nations, prompting Pakistan to attempt retaliatory strikes against India. However, India successfully thwarted these attacks and subsequently targeted several Pakistani airbases, inflicting significant damage upon its military assets. Four days later, following Pakistan's pleas for de-escalation, a ceasefire agreement was reached between the two countries.
Addressing the ongoing conflict in West Asia, he noted that since the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, more than 20 merchant vessels in the region have come under attack. He further highlighted that approximately 1,900 ships remain stranded amidst this hostile environment. He added that the daily maritime traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted to a mere six or seven vessels, whereas the average traffic volume prior to the conflict stood at approximately 130 ships.
Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi further stated, "Moreover, evolving technologies and strategies have not only reshaped how conflicts are planned, initiated, and sustained, but they have also rendered non-traditional challenges even more complex, making their countering less predictable. Consequently, the prevailing maritime environment necessitates a meticulous synergy of these elements: agility and foresight at the organizational level; combat readiness and operational effectiveness at the unit level; and professional excellence—rooted in courage and sound decision-making—at the individual level. Today, I stand here with immense pride and gratification to affirm that the Indian Navy has consistently excelled across all these dimensions."
