The Delhi Crime Branch arrested gangster Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon, a resident of Ludhiana, for his alleged involvement in the shootings at Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Cafe in Surrey, Canada. Authorities claim Sekhon is closely connected to ISI operative Harry Chatha and gangster Goldy Dhillon, the reported mastermind of the attacks. According to police, the gang had planned to kill Kapil Sharma if he refused to pay the extortion amount. During the investigation, Sekhon was identified on CCTV footage seated in a car next to two shooters.
Interrogation revealed that two shooters involved were named as Daljot Rehal and Gurjot. They reportedly wore body cameras to record the shootings and later circulated the videos online to create fear and pressure. Special Commissioner of Police Devesh Srivastava said the probe began after a Chinese PX-3 pistol went missing from a cache of illegally imported weapons seized in Delhi recently. Arms traffickers mentioned a Ludhiana-based buyer, which eventually led officers to Sekhon’s location.
Sekhon was arrested from a gym in Ludhiana by a team headed by DCP Sanjeev Yadav. Inspectors Man Singh and Sunder Gautam monitored his movements before executing the arrest. Officials stated that Sekhon had escaped to India to avoid arrest in Canada after the second shooting incident. His return was kept secret, and he stayed low-profile until Delhi police located him. According to officers, he was attempting to avoid digital tracking by limiting phone and online activities.
Joint CP Surender Kumar informed that Kap’s Cafe faced three separate shooting incidents since July. The first attack occurred on 9 July when a shooter wearing a body camera fired shots at the cafe. Goldy Dhillon’s associates claimed responsibility through a social media post, stating that the act was retaliation for alleged past remarks on Kapil Sharma’s show. This triggered serious security concerns for the comedian and staff members at his establishments.
Within a month, the cafe was attacked again when the gang claimed Kapil Sharma did not respond to their calls. In another threatening post, they warned of taking the attacks to Mumbai if demands were not met. This led authorities to review Kapil Sharma’s security protection. The comedian reportedly increased safety measures and restricted public appearances. The pressure continued and eventually resulted in further violence before the case escalated internationally.
The third shooting was a drive-by attack conducted on 7 October, just two weeks after the cafe reopened following earlier incidents. Sekhon allegedly fled Canada on 22 August, immediately after the second attack, as Canadian police intensified their crackdown. One gang member named Seepu was arrested there. Sekhon then returned to his hometown in Ludhiana where he remained hidden until apprehended by Indian authorities.
Police officials state that further investigation is underway to determine whether more individuals were involved in planning the attacks or the alleged plot to kill Kapil Sharma. Security agencies are coordinating with Canadian authorities to gather additional evidence and track links to international networks. Police are also verifying whether similar threats were sent to other public figures. Authorities are assessing whether further protection measures are needed for Kapil Sharma both in India and abroad.
