Maharashtra News: A terrible case of gender bias has now emerged in Parbhani, Maharashtra where a man, befuddled with patriarchal ideas set his wife on fire after birth of third daughter. Shocking the entire community the incident has given birth to a nationwide debate over daughters' worth in society.

The Attack

In what seems like an apparent outburst of anger and frustration at having no son, Ramnath Shinde is said to have doused his wife, Sunita Shinde, with kerosene and set her on fire. Sunita, who survived the attack, is fighting for life with severe burns at a local hospital. The neighbors, alerted by her screams, rushed to the spot and informed the police.  Speedy Arrest, But Deep Wounds
Charges of attempted murder and domestic violence got him in the custody of the police against Ramnath. Superintendent of police in Parbhani, Rohit Jadhav, assured swift legal action, but the very wounds of such an atrocious act run deeper than the legal framework can answer to.

A reflection of deep-rooted misogyny

Such barbarous crimes are enough to justify why Indian society is so preference-oriented towards sons compared to daughters seem liabilities even the campaigns for gender equality can't solve this issue. Such incidents remind us of how fast the society has to change.

Voices Against Injustice

According to Meena Kumari, a women's rights activist, it is a tragic example of daily struggles women face. "No woman should ever be punished for giving life irrespective of the gender of the child," she adds.
This is not only a cause at law; it is an alarm. In a way, educating the masses, empowering women, and strictly enforcing these laws against gender-based violence are all themselves important steps toward such crimes disappearing.

The Daughters Are a Blessing, Not a Curse

This tragedy reminds us that with every step forward, real gender equality has an incredibly long way to go. Only when society will begin to understand the value of every life as being just as important regardless of gender will change be visible.
