Rajya Sabha Elections 2026: Mallikarjun Kharge and Tarun Chugh Among 24 Leaders Elected Unopposed (MetaAi)
New Delhi: The political picture has become clear to a great extent in the biennial elections being held for 27 Rajya Sabha seats. After the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended, 24 candidates were declared elected unopposed. These include prominent faces like Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera and BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh. Voting did not take place in most of the states as the number of candidates was equal to the available seats. Now elections are left for only three seats.
The most popular name among the leaders elected unopposed is that of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. He has got another term from Karnataka. Along with him, Congress leaders Pawan Kheda and Mansoor Ali Khan were also successful in reaching the Upper House. M. Nagaraj from BJP also won unopposed from Karnataka. The arrival of BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh from Madhya Pradesh to Rajya Sabha is also considered politically important. The victory of these leaders has also underlined the strategic strength of the respective parties.
In this election, the BJP led NDA seemed to be getting a clear lead. In states where the BJP or its allies had sufficient numerical strength, their candidates were elected without any challenge. Political analysts believe that these results will further strengthen the position of NDA in Rajya Sabha. On the other hand, Congress has also succeeded in sending prominent leaders to the House in the states under its influence.
Elections were held unopposed in many states including Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya. In these states, either the opposition did not field candidates or the results were considered already decided due to numerical strength in the assembly. The unopposed election of candidates on all the vacant seats in Gujarat was especially discussed. This made it clear that in many states, political parties adopted election strategy based on consensus and numerical strength instead of competition.
Although 24 seats have been decided, there is still competition for two seats in Jharkhand and one seat in Mizoram. Voting for these three seats will be held on June 18. Political parties are now eyeing these seats because their results can affect the final number of parties in the Upper House. The Election Commission has completed all preparations for voting and counting of votes in these seats.
After the arrival of new members in the House, some changes may be seen in the political picture of Rajya Sabha. BJP and its allies may get relatively more flexibility in pursuing the legislative agenda. At the same time, Congress has also tried to strengthen the opposition politics by sending its experienced leaders back to the House. The presence of leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Khera is considered important for the opposition's strategy in the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
Political experts believe that unopposed Rajya Sabha elections are not just a formal process, but they also reflect the real strength of the parties in the states. While the ruling parties won their candidates easily, the opposition also retained influence in areas where it had sufficient support. Such results can play an important role in deciding the direction of cooperation, conflict and political equations within the Parliament in the times to come.
