New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to India has added a special touch. On Sunday, the Donald Trump aide took part in his pre-birthday celebrations with American music group Village People singing "Happy Birthday" for him at the Bharat Mandapam premises in Delhi.
Marco Rubio's birthday falls on May 28. However, a pre-celebration of his birthday was held in India. Rubio, who will turn 55, was invited on stage by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor to take part in the celebrations.
The US Embassy in New Delhi hosted a celebration of America's 250th Independence Day. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, US Ambassador Sergio Gor, along with all US Embassy staff, and several employees of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs also attended the celebrations.
During the performance, Sergio Gore suddenly announced that it was someone's birthday. "Can we invite our foreign minister?" Sergio joked, "Marco is finally 21..."
As the US Secretary of State came on stage, a giant screen with the message "Happy Birthday Marco Rubio" was seen lighting up. The a huge, four-tiered cake with multiple candles was also presented to him.
The Village People Band impressed everyone with their performance. The Village People is a renowned American disco and dance-pop band from the 1970s. The band is renowned worldwide for its outlandish stage costumes and timeless songs like "YMCA" and "Macho Man." The band was formed in 1977 by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo, and lead singer Victor Willis. During the disco era, the song "YMCA" topped music charts worldwide. Donald Trump is also a fan of "YMCA." The song was performed live at his rallies and even at his inauguration.
The evening also featured a musical performance by AR Rahman, who performed some of his popular tracks, including "Dil Se", "Maa Tujhe Salaam" and "Tere Bina".
The evening wasn't meant to end just like that, and it didn't. US President Donald Trump also joined the event online.
"We've never been closer to India and India can count on me 100 per cent and our country," Trump said, while also calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a 'great' friend. "If they ever need help, they know where to call -- they call right here," he added.
