Raghu Rai Dies at 83: The Photographer Who Framed Modern India (Insta@raghurai.official)
New Delhi: The country's senior photojournalist and famous photographer Raghu Rai passed away on Sunday. He was 83 years old and was ill for a long time. The family told that he was undergoing cancer treatment for the last two years. There is an atmosphere of mourning in the media and art world after the news of his demise.
According to close relatives, he had earlier suffered from prostate cancer. There was relief for some time after the treatment, but the disease progressed again and reached other parts of the body. Recently it had spread to the brain. During this time his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Raghu Rai was born in 1942 in Jhang, which is now in Pakistan. He got his inclination towards photography from home itself. He entered this field in the 60s and soon joined 'The Statesman' newspaper.
After working for a few years, he started freelance work in 1976. After this, he was the Director of Photography in 'India Today' from 1982 to 1992. During this period he did many big assignments.
French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, after seeing his work, nominated him for Magnum Photos in 1977. This was the turning point from where his work reached the international level.
Raghu Rai's pictures contained not just scenes but the entire atmosphere. He also captured big accidents like Bhopal gas tragedy on camera. Whereas in the pictures of Mother Teresa and Indira Gandhi, their different perspective was visible.
Along with photography, he also wrote many books. These books give a glimpse of the different colors and society of India.
He received Padma Shri in 1972. Later he received many honors in the country and abroad. In 2017, he was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Raghu Rai has gone, but his work is here. His photographs still tell the same story of what he saw with his camera. This is his real identity.
