Religious significance of February 5

February 5 holds great spiritual importance for Hindus, marking both Magh Ashtami and Bhishma Ashtami:

  • Magh Ashtami: Celebrated on the eighth day of the Magh month, devotees take holy dips at Triveni Sangam, engage in almsgiving, and practice meditation. This day also coincides with Gupt Navratri, dedicated to Goddess Durga worship.

  • Bhishma Ashtami: This day is observed in honor of Bhishma Pitamah from the Mahabharata, who, according to legend, chose his moment of death to align with the Sun’s transition into Uttarayan and Shukla Paksha.

Maha Kumbh Mela continues amidst tragedy

PM Modi’s visit comes just days after a tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh, which reportedly claimed at least 30 lives and left 60 injured during the auspicious Mauni Amavasya. Despite the incident, millions of devotees have continued to arrive for the sacred Vasant Panchami dip at the Triveni Sangam.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, will conclude on February 26.
