In a significant verdict delivered by a Kolkata court, Sanjay Roy has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last year. The case has sparked widespread public outrage and highlighted critical issues surrounding women's safety in India.

Mother’s Shame and Acceptance

Malati Roy, the 75-year-old mother of Sanjay Roy, remained confined to her home after the verdict, expressing her shame over her son’s actions. When approached by reporters, she asked them to leave, stating, “I am ashamed of everything.” As a mother of three daughters herself, she empathized with the victim's family and stated she would not object to any punishment handed down by the court. “If the court decides to hang him to death, I don’t have any objection as his crime has been proved in the eye of the law,” she said.

Family’s Isolation

Following the conviction, Malati Roy isolated herself from the outside world, refusing to answer questions about the judgment. Her daughter-in-law mentioned that none of Sanjay's relatives were present during the proceedings. One of his elder sisters expressed hope that investigations would include others allegedly involved in the crime.

Community Reactions

Neighbors shared mixed feelings about Sanjay Roy’s conviction, with some believing he could not have acted alone. Urmila Mahato, a neighbor, recounted how Sanjay had changed after joining a boxing club and associating with questionable company. “It was unimaginable that he would be convicted of raping and murdering a woman,” she remarked.

Court Verdict

On January 20, 2025, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for his crimes against an on-duty doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College. The judge noted that while the crime was heinous, it did not fall under the "rarest of rare" category justifying capital punishment. The sentencing of Sanjay Roy underscores the ongoing struggle for justice in cases of gender-based violence in India. While the verdict brings some closure to the victim’s family, it also raises questions about accountability and systemic changes needed to enhance women's safety across the country.
