In a major action on the Indo-Nepal border, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has arrested 35 prisoners who had escaped from Nepal jails. These prisoners had escaped from jails amid the recent unrest and riots in Nepal.
The SSB caught these escaped prisoners in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal while they were trying to cross the border. Officials say that vigilance has been increased on the border and the number of prisoners caught may increase further. Amid the deteriorating situation in Nepal, India has further strengthened its border so that no criminal can enter the Indian border. The recent violent protests in Nepal made the situation serious. Amidst these protests, thousands of prisoners escaped from jails in 77 districts of Nepal. Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had to resign, after which the law and order situation there deteriorated.
Nepal Army has been deployed around the prisons, but the situation is still tense. Meanwhile, on the Indian side, SSB performed its responsibility well and caught the escaped prisoners before they could enter India.
SSB caught 22 prisoners in Uttar Pradesh, 10 in Bihar and 3 in West Bengal. All these prisoners were trying to enter India without valid documents. SSB has increased vigilance on the border and started strict checking of every person coming and going.Intelligence gathering and patrolling has been further intensified to ensure that no escaped prisoner can enter the Indian border. On Wednesday, five more prisoners were caught in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar district who were trying to enter India after escaping from Nepal.
All the captured prisoners have been handed over to the local police, where their identity and crimes are being investigated. An SSB official said that the protests led by 'Gen-G' in Nepal made it easier to break into the jails there. The prisoners managed to escape from the jails by threatening the security personnel. But India's vigilance foiled the plans of these criminals.
The recent protests in Nepal spread chaos across the country. Due to these protests, the security of the prisons became weak and the prisoners took advantage of the situation. Nepal Police withdrew from their positions in many places, which worsened the situation. Only the police headquarters remained safe. The Nepal Army has now tightened security around prisons and curfew-like measures have been taken. But the number of escaped prisoners is so high that it remains a challenge for Nepal to catch them again.
This situation is important for India because the 1,751 kilometer long open border between India and Nepal can become an easy route for criminals. The 24 hour surveillance of SSB on this border adjoining Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim has played a big role in preventing escaped prisoners from Nepal from entering India.
