New Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has announced its decision to abstain from the upcoming MLC elections in Telangana, scheduled for February 27, 2025. This strategic move comes as the party aims to concentrate on local body elections following a series of electoral setbacks.

BRS Skips MLC Elections

In a surprising turn of events, BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) instructed party leaders not to contest or support candidates in the elections for three vacant MLC seats. The constituencies involved include the Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal teachers constituency, Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar teachers constituency, and Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad graduates constituency. This decision reflects the party's concern over potential further losses, as acknowledged by a party functionary who emphasized that any defeat could exacerbate existing challenges for BRS, which has already faced significant losses in recent state assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Focus on Local Elections

KTR, the working president of BRS, conveyed KCR's directive during a recent meeting with party leaders. He stressed the importance of redirecting efforts toward local body elections expected to take place in late February and early March. This shift aims to regain momentum and strengthen the party's grassroots presence, which is crucial given the current political landscape where both Congress and BJP are actively fielding candidates for the MLC seats.

Candidates from Opposing Parties

As BRS withdraws from contention, both Congress and BJP have announced their candidates for the MLC elections. Congress has nominated V Narender Reddy for the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar graduates constituency, while BJP has put forward Puli Sarottham Reddy, Malka Komaraiah, and C Anji Reddy for the respective constituencies. The nominations will be accepted until February 10, with polling set to occur from 8 AM to 4 PM on February 27.
