National news: Amir Khan Muttaqi arrived in India with a five-member delegation. This marks the first official visit by a senior Taliban leader since the group seized power in 2021. On October 10, he is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. He is also expected to meet National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The visit is seen as a significant step in opening dialogue. It reflects India’s cautious attempt to engage with the Taliban regime.

On October 11, Muttaqi will visit Darul Uloom Deoband. This seminary holds symbolic importance for Taliban leaders. Many of their commanders studied at Pakistan’s Haqqania, modeled after Deoband. The visit highlights historical religious ties.

Trip to Taj Mahal Scheduled

On October 12, Muttaqi will travel to Agra. He is scheduled to visit the Taj Mahal. This cultural stop adds symbolic value to the trip. The following day, he will meet Indian business leaders. Trade expansion will be a key topic.

Engagement with Afghan Community

On October 13, Muttaqi will meet Afghan community members in New Delhi. He will listen to their concerns directly. Many Afghans in India face uncertainty. The Taliban aims to project itself as responsive. His visit ends on October 15.  The visit comes amid strained Taliban-Pakistan ties. Islamabad accuses Kabul of supporting militants. India sees an opportunity to open channels cautiously. The UN had earlier lifted a travel ban for Muttaqi. His presence in India marks a historic diplomatic moment.
