Himanta Sarma Government Introduces UCC Bill in Assam Assembly, ST Communities Get Exemption (X)
New Delhi: The Assam government presented the Uniform Civil Code or UCC Bill in the Assembly on Monday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself brought this bill in the House. As soon as the bill came, the stir in the politics of the state has intensified. The government is saying that the objective is clear, the laws related to marriage, divorce, property and live-in should be the same for everyone. But the biggest uproar is that tribal and tribal communities have been kept out of this law.
In the draft, the government has proposed a complete ban on polygamy. Also, registration will be made mandatory for those living in live-in. Registration of marriage and divorce will also now be mandatory. The government claims that this will give strength to women. Confusion in the law will end and family law will be the same for every religion.
CM Himanta has already said that whether it is hilly or plain, this law will not be applicable on tribal communities. The government argues that there will be no tampering with their traditions, customs and culture. Sixth Schedule areas and tribal groups have been specifically excluded. Now questions are being raised regarding this exemption.
As soon as the bill came, the opposition became the attacker. Many Muslim and Christian organizations allege that UCC will affect only them. The government is adopting a dual attitude by keeping the tribals out. Congress and AIUDF have demanded that the bill be sent to the select committee. First there should be a discussion in the entire state, everyone's opinion should be taken, then a law should be made.
BJP had promised to bring UCC in the manifesto in Assam elections. After forming the government, Himanta Sarma kept it a priority. After Uttarakhand and Gujarat, Assam may become the third state where such a big step has been taken on UCC. BJP is calling it social reform.
Experts believe that UCC will become the biggest political debate of Assam in the coming days. BJP is linking it with women's rights and equality. The opposition is calling it an election agenda. There are chances of uproar as soon as the discussion on the bill starts in the House. Both the party and the opposition have drawn their swords. Now it remains to be seen whether the bill is passed or goes to committee.
