Kolkata: Supporters of TMC and BJP clashed with each other in West Bengal and Jagaddal area of North 24 Parganas on Sunday night, and within no time the roads became a battlefield. The biggest thing is that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally was to be held in the same area the very next day. Preparations for the rally were in full swing, workers of both parties were on the streets and the political tension that was already in the air came out in the form of violence that night.
The fight started with such a small thing that it is difficult to believe. An altercation broke out between the two parties over the installation of party flags and posters. Initially there was just a war of words but within some time, people from both sides started gathering, and stones started being thrown. What started with flags ended with stone pelting.

Local people say that the atmosphere was already heavy. As soon as people from both parties came face to face, the spark got fueled. Police reached the spot but it was not easy to control the crowd. After much effort the situation became somewhat manageable.
BJP workers directly allege that TMC supporters tore their posters and banners. Angered, they reached the police station with a complaint but did not get any relief there either. There was again a clash between the two sides outside the police station. That means the police station which should have been a place of peace also became a center of tension that night.
This is where things got really serious. Country-made bombs were thrown at the house of Pawan Kumar Singh, BJP candidate from Bhatpara assembly seat. The sound of the explosion spread panic in the entire area. At least three people were injured in this attack and were immediately taken to the hospital.
Pawan Kumar Singh clearly said that this violence is not the result of any sudden anger but is the result of long-standing pressure. He claims that even in the party meeting held a day earlier, his program was deliberately disrupted. He said that after going to the police station, his supporters were attacked which is absolutely wrong.
The BJP leader claims that bullets were also fired during the clash in which a CISF jawan was injured. Apart from this, there is news of BJP leader Arjun Singh associated with Barrackpur also being injured. If the news of firing is true then this matter was not just a political clash.
The second phase of voting is to be held on April 29 and the atmosphere in the state is already heated. Incidents like Jagaddal add fuel to that fire. The real test now before the administration is to maintain peace in the area for the next few days so that voting can take place without any disturbance. It remains to be seen how the Election Commission and the police deal with this challenge.
