A Stalwart Takes Command
On May 2, 2025, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari assumed the role of Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), succeeding Air Marshal S.P. Dharkar, amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack. Hailing from Shrikalpur village in Siwan, Bihar, Tiwari’s appointment as the 49th Vice Chief comes at a critical juncture, with India bolstering its military preparedness. With a career spanning over 37 years, this Kargil War veteran is poised to steer the IAF through challenging times, leveraging his extensive operational and strategic expertise.
Distinguished Career and Expertise
Commissioned as a fighter pilot in 1986, Tiwari has logged over 3,600 flying hours, primarily on Mirage-2000 jets. A graduate of the National Defence Academy and National Defence College, where he earned the President’s Gold Medal, he is a qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot. His contributions include testing India’s indigenous Tejas aircraft and operational weapons testing on Mirage-2000s. Tiwari’s valor during the Kargil conflict and leadership as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Air Command (2023-2025) earned him accolades, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2025), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022), and Vayu Sena Medal (2008).
