Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stunned the House by stating that the death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg may not be due to an accident. He said new evidence gathered by investigators is pointing towards something more serious. The claim was made during an adjournment motion raised by the Opposition, which had demanded a detailed discussion on the 2024 death case. Sarma maintained that he could not share exact details because the probe is still active and sensitive. However, he assured that the government will take strong measures and no one will be shielded. Members in the Assembly reacted with shock as his statement shifted the entire narrative.
This is not the first time the Chief Minister has hinted that Garg’s death may involve foul play. Over the past few months, he has repeatedly said that certain facts were not adding up. He confirmed that the charge sheet in the case must be submitted by December 17, but he has set an internal deadline of December 8. According to him, the investigation is now entering a decisive stage. These statements have intensified public curiosity. People are demanding clarity, but authorities insist they will speak only after the evidence is firmly established. The family and fans have been waiting anxiously for official closure.
The Criminal Investigation Department of Assam Police formed a Special Investigation Team to handle the case. The SIT began its work after more than 60 FIRs were filed across the state demanding a proper inquiry. Initial reports had labeled the incident as a swimming accident during Garg’s visit to Singapore for the North East India Festival. However, sources within the probe have reportedly found signs that do not match typical accidental circumstances. Investigators are examining financial records, call logs and travel details to determine whether an intentional act occurred. The Chief Minister’s remarks indicate that the findings could lead to major legal developments.
Seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. These include the chief organiser of the festival, Garg’s manager, two band members and his cousin who serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam. Two personal security officers were also taken into custody after financial transactions worth over Rs 1.1 crore were allegedly found in their accounts. All seven are in judicial custody and charged under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to murder, criminal conspiracy and negligence. These arrests have intensified curiosity around the incident and added pressure on investigators to present conclusive evidence soon.
According to the Chief Minister, the nature of the evidence being examined rules out the possibility of an accidental death. He clarified that he is not ready to officially call it a murder until the investigation is complete, but current indicators point in that direction. Opposition members have demanded transparency, while supporters of the government argue that revealing details at this stage may impact the inquiry. Public reactions have varied from shock to anger. Social media users are debating whether this was a tragic miscalculation or something more planned.
Across Assam, emotions are running high. Zubeen Garg was not only a cultural icon but also deeply loved by people of all ages. His death in Singapore on September 19 left fans devastated. Now, with the Chief Minister’s revelation, the situation has once again become a matter of intense public interest. Many feel justice must be delivered swiftly if wrongdoing is confirmed. Others believe speculation should be avoided until official facts are released. Cultural organisations have requested calm and urged authorities to ensure no aspect of the case is ignored.
With a charge-sheet date set and ongoing inspections of evidence, all focus now shifts to the outcome of the SIT’s final report. If murder is confirmed, more arrests and legal action are expected. If it is ruled accidental, the government may face questions over earlier remarks. For now, the Chief Minister has maintained that justice will prevail and no one will be spared if found guilty. Citizens across the state are waiting for final clarity. The case has transformed from a suspected accident to a potential criminal conspiracy, and its resolution is now watched closely at national level.
