New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Gujarat Titans and the Delhi Capitals played out what has been the most thrilling match of IPL 2026 so far. The Gujarat Titans secured a one-run victory in a match that went down to the very last ball. During this contest, Gujarat's star wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler was in prolific form with the bat. After Sai Sudharsan was dismissed early, Buttler anchored the innings and scored runs at a blistering pace. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Jos Buttler played a knock of 52 runs off just 27 balls. His innings featured three fours and five sixes. In doing so, Jos Buttler also achieved a major milestone.
In the match against the Delhi Capitals, Jos Buttler smashed five sixes during the Powerplay, thereby etching his name into the record books. The Gujarat Titans had acquired Buttler for ₹15.75 crore during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. He has now become only the second non-opening batsman in IPL history to hit five sixes within the first six overs of an innings. Ahead of him stands the legendary Suresh Raina, who, while playing for Chennai against Punjab in the second Qualifier of IPL 2014, had smashed six sixes in the opening six overs.
Buttler hit the first six of his innings during the third over of Gujarat's innings. He followed this up by hitting a six off Axar Patel. Then, in the fifth over, Buttler smashed three sixes off Mukesh Kumar. Upon hitting his fifth six, he set a record for hitting 600 sixes in T20 cricket. He has become the first player in the T20 format—excluding West Indian cricketers—to have hit more than 600 sixes. Prior to Buttler, four players had hit over 600 sixes, and all of them were from the West Indies.
Chasing a target of 211 runs for victory, Delhi required two runs off the final two balls; however, on the fifth ball of the final over, Miller declined to take a single run. He missed the final delivery but set off for a single; however, Kuldeep Yadav was run out by a throw from Jos Buttler. Speaking to 'JioCinema', Gavaskar remarked, "David Miller was playing exceptionally well and was confident that he would finish the match. One cannot fault his intent. Prasidh Krishna delivered a brilliant slower bouncer that he was unable to connect with. Such things happen under pressure."
