Asia Cup Controversy: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi apologized to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting on Tuesday for the trophy controversy that followed the Asia Cup 2025 final. Naqvi had insisted on handing over the trophy to the winning Indian team, but when India refused to accept it from Naqvi, he decided to take it and leave. According to sources, Naqvi expressed regret over the unfortunate incident, but still refused to hand it over to the Indian team.
Naqvi, who is leaving for Lahore on October 1, demanded that Suryakumar Yadav go to Dubai to receive the trophy. However, the BCCI responded sharply, saying, "He didn't receive the trophy when you were in front of him, do you think he will now?" The BCCI was represented at the meeting by former treasurer Ashish Shelar and vice-president Rajiv Shukla. The BCCI asked Naqvi to respect his position and position and hand over the trophy, but the ACC chief refused to do so. The meeting ended without any significant outcome. The board members will meet again later to resolve the dispute.
After the Pahalgam attack, there was a general sentiment in India to end all sporting ties with Pakistan. However, when the BCCI agreed to play in the Asia Cup, this decision became a source of controversy. A campaign to boycott the India-Pakistan match on September 14th was launched before the India-Pakistan match. In this match, Indian players did not shake hands with Pakistani players, and Suryakumar Yadav dedicated the victory to the armed forces and the victims of the Pahalgam attack. This angered Naqvi and he filed a complaint against match referee Andy Pycroft and Suryakumar Yadav.
Even in the Super Four, Pakistani player Haris Rauf and other players made derogatory gestures against India, including gestures like "6-0" and "jet crash." This controversy arose due to false allegations against India that they had shot down Indian jets during Operation Sindoor. The final was no less dramatic, with Naqvi leaving with the trophy and the Indian team having to celebrate without the trophy and medals.
In the post-match press conference, Suryakumar Yadav said, "In my time playing and following cricket, I have never seen a champion team be denied the trophy it earned. I feel we deserved it. For me, the real trophy is in my dressing room; for all 14 players and the support staff, it is the real trophy."
