New Delhi: Former South African cricketer Heinrich Klaasen smashed a magnificent half-century during the IPL 2026 on Thursday. The star batter produced a splendid innings of 52 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.
Having bid farewell to international cricket just last year, the South African cricketer demonstrated that he still has plenty of cricket left in him—that the hunger for runs remains undiminished. But could he possibly reconsider his decision to retire? This very question was posed to Klaasen by his SRH teammate, Nitish Kumar Reddy.
In a video shared on the IPL's social media handles, Heinrich Klaasen told Nitish Kumar Reddy that, for a brief period, he had indeed contemplated reversing his retirement decision; however, he ultimately decided against it. He stated that, given his family priorities, he would not be coming out of retirement. Nevertheless, he added that he deeply misses playing alongside his teammates—a sentiment he felt particularly strongly during the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Heinrich Klaasen had retired from all formats of international cricket in 2025. "It was quite difficult for about two weeks," Klaasen remarked. "After that, we decided against it [reversing the retirement]. Clearly, my family played a major role in that decision. I missed my friends a lot during the World Cup—missed them so much that I actually wanted to make a comeback. I even spoke to Aiden [Markram] about it... but after the World Cup, I realized that it wasn't going to happen. So, I am not coming back."
The 34-year-old Klaasen was last seen playing international cricket during the 2025 Champions Trophy. In that tournament, his team, South Africa, suffered a 50-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the semi-finals.
In the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Klaasen struck a brilliant half-century. Although Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head narrowly missed out on reaching their respective half-centuries, both played explosive innings. Subsequently, led by Jaydev Unadkat, the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers delivered a magnificent performance, restricting KKR's innings to just 161 runs. Unadkat claimed 3 wickets, while Nitish Kumar Reddy and Eshan Malinga took 2 wickets each. Harsh Dubey secured one breakthrough.
Batting first, SRH posted a total of 226 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Klaasen played an innings of 52 runs off 35 balls. Abhishek Sharma scored 48 runs off 21 balls, and Travis Head made 46 runs off 21 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy also contributed 39 runs off 24 balls. In reply, Finn Allen provided KKR with a blistering start, though his explosive innings lasted only 7 balls; Allen smashed 28 runs off those 7 deliveries. Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a brisk innings of 52 runs off 29 balls. However, KKR's innings was cut short after just 16 overs. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the match by 65 runs.
