Move Over Streetwear! The Indian Maxi Is Becoming Gen Z Boys’ Hottest Summer Trend (Instagram)
New Delhi: There was a time when nighties or maxis were seen only as comfortable home clothes. This garment was usually associated with mothers, grandmothers or women busy with household chores. But now the same nighty is in discussion on social media as a new fashion trend. Interestingly, a large number of those who are carrying forward this trend are young boys. On platforms like Instagram and YouTube, many youth are making videos wearing colorful nighties, riding bikes, going for walks and openly presenting it as a fashion statement.
It was initially adopted as a joke on social media. Some content creators made videos wearing nighties for entertainment, but within no time the trend went viral. Now many youth are presenting it as a comfortable garment that provides relief from the heat. Instagram reels and short video platforms are full of content where boys are seen doing everyday activities wearing nighties.
It is extremely hot in many parts of India at this time. In such a situation, the demand for light, loose and cotton clothes increases. The biggest advantage of nighty is its comfortable design. It gives openness to the body and feels relatively more comfortable in hot weather. This is the reason why many youth have moved beyond being a joke and have started seeing it as a practical piece of clothing.
Maxi is not originally an Indian garment. Its trend increased in western countries in the 1960s and 1970s. Later it reached India and with time became a part of the Indian lifestyle. Changes were made in it according to local needs. The cotton fabric, colorful prints and loose stitching made it extremely suitable for Indian homes. Gradually it became a symbol of comfort and convenience rather than fashion.
Kerala's name is often taken for the popularity of nighties. It is believed that when the expatriates working in Gulf countries returned to their homes, they brought such comfortable clothes for the family. This garment became increasingly popular in the hot and humid climate of Kerala. Later its popularity spread from South India to other parts of the country.
For a long time, nighties were seen only as home wear. Even in films and TV serials, it is often shown in association with housewives. But in the era of social media, the definition of fashion is changing rapidly. Today the young generation does not hesitate to adopt even such clothes that were never taken seriously in the fashion world.
The trend of comfortable clothes has increased rapidly in the fashion industry in the last few years. The popularity of oversize T-shirts, loose trousers, loungewear and athleisure is part of this change. In such an environment, even the trend of nighties is not surprising people. It may have started as a joke on social media, but now it shows that the new generation has started giving priority to comfort over fashion.
