New Delhi: Every year on December 16, India pauses to celebrate Vijay Diwas, a moment that reshaped the history of war. It is marked as a day to honour the Indian Armed Forces for their role in the 1971 war against Pakistan.

The 13-day war ended on this day with a decisive victory for India and led to the birth of Bangladesh as a nation. It is a day to remember the sacrifice and bravery of the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives for the country.

Why December 16 Matters?

The 1971 conflict began on December 3 and lasted for 13 days (December 3-16).  On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani military surrendered in Dhaka to Indian and Bengali forces (Mukti Bahini), which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

More than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their weapons, making it one of the largest surrenders in military history. For India, December 16 is not just about winning a war. It is about standing up for human dignity at a time when millions of refugees had crossed into Indian territory from East Pakistan.

What Happened During the 1971 War?

On December 3, Pakistan launched air strikes on Indian air stations, officially starting a war. India responded with a coordinated military operation on land, sea, and air. Indian forces, along with Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi freedom fighters), swiftly surrounded and defeated Pakistani troops in East Pakistan.

On December 16, 1971, more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their arms and surrendered to Indian forces in Dhaka, marking the end of the war. This was a moment that stunned the world and cemented India’s place in military history.

How Is Vijay Diwas Observed Across the Country?

The day is marked by tribute ceremonies, especially at war memorials. Senior military officers, veterans, families of soldiers, government leaders, and citizens gather to pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives.

Schools and colleges also hold special programs. Veterans of the war are invited to these programs to share their stories, and young people are encouraged to learn about the nation’s past. For many families of veterans, it is also a deeply personal day of remembrance.

What Do People Remember?

On Vijay Diwas, many recall the bravery of soldiers who fought under challenging conditions.

The day's highlights:

The surrender of around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers after 13 days of intense fighting.

Around 3,843 Indian soldiers were killed in the war, and another 9,851 were wounded.

The unity and support between Indian forces and Bengali freedom fighters.

The formation of a new nation, Bangladesh, following struggle and sacrifice.

I will protect the country, this country is my life.
To protect it, I will sacrifice my heart and soul.
Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.

The fragrance of the soil of my country comes from my body; I make the enemy bite the dust; I can even hold the sky in my fist; I can make flowers bloom even in the desert. Jai Hind.
