In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirahua, suffered a big defeat in the Azamgarh constituency. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has taken the lead, highlighting a crucial political shift in this key Uttar Pradesh region. Azamgarh, known for its political importance, witnessed a fierce contest between major parties, including the SP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Dharmendra Yadav secures victory in Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat

Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party has clinched a decisive victory in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat, Uttar Pradesh. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dinesh Lal Yadav by a substantial margin of 161,035 votes. Dharmendra Yadav gained 508,239 votes, while Nirahua received 347,204 votes. Meanwhile, Masood Ansari of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) secured 179,839 votes.

Nirahua's by-election win

In the 2022 by-election for the Azamgarh seat, BJP's Nirahua emerged victorious with 312,768 votes, narrowly beating SP's Dharmendra Yadav, who obtained 304,089 votes. The BSP candidate at the time received 266,210 votes. This by-election was necessitated after Akhilesh Yadav vacated the seat following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, Akhilesh Yadav had won the Azamgarh seat, but he vacated it after the 2022 assembly elections, leading to the by-election.
