Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again adopted a tough stance on immigration, posting a message on the social media platform Truth Social. This post has sparked a controversy. Trump wrote on Truth Social that if you import people from the Third World, you become the Third World yourself. Sadly, if you bring in people from developing nations, your country will soon turn into a Third World nation, and there will be nothing you can do about it. Make America Great Again!

This post comes at a time when legal and political debates regarding illegal immigration in the US are at their peak. Throughout his political career, Trump has advocated for strict immigration policies, including building a wall on the southern border, deporting illegal immigrants, and implementing a merit-based immigration system.

Why Were Donald Trump Administration's Policies Ruled Unlawful?

Notably, a US federal judge struck down the Trump administration's immigration policies on Friday, declaring them unlawful. District Judge John McConnell in Providence, Rhode Island, ruled that the administration had improperly halted the processing of asylum, work permit, green card, and citizenship applications for nationals from 39 countries. The judge stated that the policies of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) left people from dozens of countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East in a state of "legal limbo." He noted that while the immigrants had followed all legal procedures, USCIS refused to adjudicate their applications for months.

Is Discrimination Based on Country of Birth?

In his ruling, Judge McConnell wrote that USCIS policies were created without statutory authority and were driven by "anti-immigrant sentiment." He stated that the reason for withholding decisions was not any fault of the individuals themselves, but rather the country of their birth. This ruling is being hailed as a major victory for a coalition of immigrant service organizations and labor unions. These organizations filed a lawsuit in March challenging USCIS policies. Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward stated that this ruling confirms the federal government cannot shut down lawful immigration pathways or discriminate based on a person's country of origin.

It is worth noting that the Trump administration implemented these policies following the killing of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., in November. According to prosecutors, the attack was carried out by an Afghan immigrant. Subsequently, Trump imposed full or partial travel bans on 39 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Haiti, Somalia, Venezuela, and Syria. The judge remarked that these policies affected the lives of countless individuals who faced discrimination solely because of their country of birth. The judge clarified that USCIS had violated immigration laws enacted by Congress.
