New Delhi: With Iran wracked by mass protests across multiple cities, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel advisory on Monday, urging Indians to exercise caution when travelling to the west Asian country.

What did the MEA say?

"In view of recent developments, Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice," the MEA said in its statement.

The MEA advisory also urged Indians who are already present in Iran to follow a set of safety precautions and guidelines.

"Indian citizens and PIOs currently in Iran should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, and closely monitor news as well as the website and social media handles of the Embassy of India in Tehran," the ministry said.

"Indian nationals living in Iran on resident visas are advised to register with the Indian Embassy, if not already done so," the statement added.

What is the situation in Iran?

The MEA advisory comes on the heels of ppular protests across Iran, including in the capital Tehran and several other cities. Local media have reported regular clashes between protestors and the security forces in several parts of the country.

The demonstrations began in late December after shopkeepers in Tehran staged strikes over economic grievances before the protests expanded in scale and scope. Protesters later raised political demands.

At least 14 people, including members of the security forces, have been killed in clashes since the protests began.

Is Khamenei preparing to flee to Russia?

In this environment, a shocking claim has come to light regarding Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israeli media, quoting a British newspaper, have said that Khamenei has prepared a separate plan for emergencies.

According to the report, if the situation goes completely out of hand and there is a danger of the government falling, Khamenei has already worked on a plan to go to Russia. It is being said that this decision has not been taken suddenly, but with full preparation.

It is being said that along with 86-year-old Khamenei, his family, some trusted associates and about 20 very close people are involved in this possible escape plan. The name of his son Mojtaba is also being mentioned in this list, who is considered his successor. It has also been claimed in the report that there are preparations to take away a large amount of money.

Israeli intelligence expert Benny Sabati says that there is no safe option left for Khamenei except Russia. He has been praising Russian President Vladimir Putin for a long time, and relations between the two countries are also considered very close. Apart from this, due to cultural similarities, Russia may be a comfortable place for them.
